Rural Water - Quarter 4, 2010 - (Page 50)

From the CEO Thank You, Fred Sheldon Fred is one of those rare people who has sacrificially given of himself well beyond what was required and expected. Personally, Fred is someone who means a great deal to me. n NRWA’S BOARD IS composed of leaders from 49 states – soon to be 50. The leader of this board of leaders is elected every two years. This fall is the occasion for one leader to step down and the next president to step up. BY ROB JOHNSON, NRWA CEO Fred Sheldon has served admirably in that position despite having challenges that most of us don’t have. Living in north central Washington near the Canadian border poses significant travel issues for Fred. He has had more flights cancelled and delayed than anyone I have known in my 32 years of traveling. Seems like every TSA staffer knows him personally, as does every Delta rebooking agent. Flying with Fred is an adventure that even his wife, Sheron, remembers vividly – like the time their flight skidded off the icy runway and the rescue equipment and television cameras showed up. And the times the luggage didn’t arrive or the bag was broken. Crowded airplanes, middle seats and unplanned nights in cold hotel rooms were all given for the cause. During Fred’s term, NRWA has experienced unprecedented growth. Much of his time has been building relationships with those who mean the most to our association. We all quickly learned that you don’t bring a problem to Fred that you don’t want solved. His years as a utility manager taught him to deal with issues quickly and decisively. In Rural Water, our leaders are people who will always do the right thing. They are not afraid to admit they are wrong and quickly change directions to the new course. Fred is one of those rare people who has sacrificially given of himself well beyond what was required and expected. Personally, Fred is someone who means a great deal to me. He has said that last year, he spent more time with me than his wife. I am afraid to fact check that statistic. The NRWA president is expected to manage the affairs of a board of 48 other leaders. That is not a task for the squeamish or unconfident. That is a high standard to achieve and Fred Sheldon has risen to all the challenges posed before him. May God bless him for his sacrificial giving. On September 30, Joe Liles from Kentucky becomes our next president. As Joe Liles takes the gavel of leadership, please pray for God to grant him the wisdom to always do the right thing and for strength to complete his task. When you see him, thank Joe for all he is about to do for all of us. 50 • Fourth Quarter 2010
