TheLeaders Gather in Charlotte American Spirit Industry NSSGA’S ANNUAL CONVENTION IS a yearly opportunity for members of the aggregates industry to meet and share ideas and knowledge. This year’s convention enabled participants to capitalize on the great strengths and expertise of their national and international peers. Nearly 500 leaders of the aggregates industry from around the country – and an international contingency of aggregates producers from China, Colombia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Europe – met at the Westin Charlotte, March 11-14, for NSSGA’s 2012 annual convention. Attendees participated in committee meetings, learned from experts and networked with other industry professionals. Other highlights of the 2012 convention included a tour of the Martin Marietta Arrowood Quarry and numerous activities and tours for spouses. The convention location, adjacent to the AGG1 Forum & Expo at the Charlotte Convention Center, was a convenient setting for aggregates industry leaders to share ideas and build relationships with other AGG1 attendees and learn how innovation and technology could positively impact their businesses. HONOR AWARDS CEREMONY Ceremony. Other awards included the James M. Christie Safety and Health Professional of the Year, State Association Executive of the Year and Aggregates Manager magazine AggMan of the Year. NSSGA also recognized individuals for their political grassroots efforts in 2011. While he could not be there in person, Tony Basolo, retired president of Dolese Bros. Co., Oklahoma City, Okla., was announced as the 2012 Barry K. Wendt Memorial Commitment Award winner for his dedication to the construction aggregates industry, his family and his community. Basolo is expected to receive his award at NSSGA’s Fall Board Meeting in Colorado. James M. Christie Safety & Health Professional of the Year Zach Knoop, corporate director of safety for Knife River Corporation, Bismarck, N.D., was named NSSGA’s 2011 James M. Christie Safety & Health Professional. The award, established in 1987, provides national recognition to an individual who has made superior and substantial contributions to his or her company’s and the industry’s efforts toward proactive safe and healthful operating practices. Indiana Executive Captures State Association Executive of the Year Award During the Annual Convention, NSSGA honored the aggregates industry’s “best and brightest” with Gold Awards for safety achievement, environmental stewardship and community involvement during the NSSGA Honor Awards 12 STONE, SAND & GRAVEL REVIEW, May/June 2012 Robert G. Jones, executive director of the Indiana Minerals Aggregates Association, was named NSSGA’s 2011 State Aggregates Association Executive of the Year.
