NSSGA WORK @ Pike Industries, an Oldcastle® company, invited vendors, suppliers, subcontractors and general contractors to a luncheon meeting in Concord, N.H., to educate the audience about proposed changes to highway funding in the New Hampshire legislature. At the June NSSGA Executive Committee meeting, priority topics affecting the association, as well as the need for a multi-year highway bill, were discussed. Pike Industries’ Christian Zimmermann led a discussion of the economic downturn’s impact on the industry and the difficulty of planning for the future with the uncertainty of federal funding. The meeting was attended by a small group of key customers/subcontractors with Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.). Workers from Knife River Corporation talked with Sen. Jon tester (D-Mont.) (L) and were able to discuss the importance of highway funding, local jobs and local Montana issues. Tester mentioned that once Congress gets a bill, he will vote for it because he knows this is a jobs bill. NSSGA President and CEO Joy Wilson and Senior Vice President for Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Pam Whitted met with House Government Reform and Oversight Committee chairman Darryl Issa (R-Calif.), third from left, front row. NSSGA’s Joe Casper, vice president for Safety Services, discusses initiatives with MSHA at the Michigan Aggregates Association Annual Meeting. Tom Carroll, Vulcan Materials Company, is chairman of the transportation committee of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce. Shown here is a meeting with businessmen who were invited to meet with Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) in one of her listening tours. NSSGA Past Chairman Louis Griesemer, president and CEO, Springfield Underground, Springfield, Mo., articulated examples of what aggregates operators – large and small – have to contend with in responding to appropriate U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration enforcement actions at a key House Education and Workforce subcommittee hearing in May. The panel focus was on MSHA modernization. 38 STONE, SAND & GRAVEL REVIEW, July/August 2011
