Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.), chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure committee, discussed the importance of the highway reauthorization bill with Knife River’s Metro Paving Manager Jim Jackson and Vice President Brian Gray. Mike Ameele, sales manager for the Portland Metro Division looks on. Eric Helm and Bruce Helm from IAAP member Conmat, Inc. hosted Quarry Days in Freeport, Ill., and invited Don Manzullo (R-16) (center) to join them for a first-hand look at their operation and to talk about reauthorization. Luck Stone’s John Legore (L) and Hardy Josephson (R) hosted Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10th) at the Leesburg Plant to discuss the Mine Safety bill and the need for highway reauthorization, as well as to see an actual quarry operation. Illinois Rep. Judy Biggert (R-13th) (L) had never visited a quarry, but was quite impressed with the operation, thanks to Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers member Frank Maly, Boughton Trucking & Materials, Inc., and IAAP Executive Director John Henriksen (R). Kentucky Crushed Stone Association member David Haydon, president of Nally & Haydon, LLC, hosted Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-2nd) at the Cedar Creek Quarry in Bardstown. Oldcastle Materials Oldcastle Materials generated a number of visits with congressional leaders in August during the summer recess. Rep. Michael Michaud (D-Maine) visited Pike Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) toured The Shelly Company’s Streetsboro S&G Pit and asphalt plant. Industries’ Poland asphalt plant. Idaho Gov. Butch Otter visited HK Contractors’ Idaho Falls Asphalt Plant. New Hampshire’s House candidate Charlie Bass (R) toured Pike Industries’ Hookset Quarry.
