PROJECT FOCUS | by Ron Derven Vanishing Edge with a View THIS BEAUTIFUL VANISHING edge pool, located in Kings Point, New York, won a well-deserved Gold medal in NESPA’s 2011 Design Awards Competition, APSP’s Awards of Excellence competition as well as other competitions. The most striking feature of the pool and spa is its waterfront setting on Long Island Sound that captures a truly royal view of the Throgs Neck Bridge and the New York skyline. BUILDER The project’s builder was Peter Cattano, owner of Paco Pools and Spas, Baldwin, New York, and a past president of NESPA. “I started my own company in 1980,” said Cattano. “Prior to that I worked with my father. He was an equipment supplier who opened a pool building company. Around the time of his death, I decided that I wanted to devote myself to pool building, not the equipment side of the business.” 16 www.nespapool.org Today, Paco Pools is a builder, service company and retailer with a store at 784 Merrick Road on Long Island. Cattano has seen too many economic cycles on Long Island over the years and decided early on to keep his business small and customer focused. “There are a lot of uncertainties in this industry,” he says. “You get big, you hire a lot of employees, overhead grows and then you are hit with an economic downturn. What do you do? I want to be lean and mean instead of being big and spread out. By the same token, we attend to all the construction details that are so necessary to create a truly top-shelf project. In addition, we are structured to provide the specialized service that our clientele demands.” Although Paco Pools will build pools and spas out on the south end of Suffolk County and in New York City, its main focus is Nassau County. Originally a gunite builder, it has shifted over to shotcrete, which is what was used in constructing the http://www.nespapool.org
