Company Profile Buttcon Ltd.: By Steven Cutler Earning Loyalty Through Fairness A CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT, general contracting and design build firm founded in 1979 by Michael Butt, now its CEO, Buttcon Ltd. has thrived in its field by holding fast to its commitment to exceed the expectations of its clients. Working with some of the leading industrial, commercial, institutional and high-rise residential organizations in Canada, Buttcon is known to deliver the highest-quality workmanship and a consistent record of on-time and onbudget construction. At the same time, according to president and COO Peter Di Gaetano, Buttcon is an employee-owned corporation whose profits are shared by each of its employee shareholders. Gaetano says, “Our objective is to be the employer of choice, the place everyone wants to work.” That was Michael Butt’s philosophy from the start, says Di Gaetano – to earn loyalty through fairness. “And that’s kind of worked for him,” he adds, “because he’s kept a good core of people here.” The average length of employment at Buttcon is 15 years, “and we have a 30-year club right now and a 25-year club,” boasts Di Gaetano. “We still have our first employee here, Fernando Costa, our general superintendent.” Buttcon has constructed facilities for major casinos, schools, hotels, multi-unit residential properties, pharmaceutical manufacturers, offices, restaurants and more. The company manages construction for Loblaw, the giant grocery chain, building new stores and renovating others all across Ontario. Currently Buttcon is managing the modernization of Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto’s Garden District, for Loblaw, the property’s owner. “They are putting in a grocery store on the main level, some retail on the second level,” explains Di Gaetano, “and Ryerson University took part of the second floor, third floor and concourse level.” Buttcon is currently managing the $100 million modernization of Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto’s Garden District. spring/summer 2011 the generals 27
