The Generals - Spring/Summer 2011 - (Page 9)

President’s Message There is no doubt that 2011 will be challenging, and to face that challenge, OGCA has committed to a new three-year strategic plan. It is ambitious, but it will provide OGCA with the ability to assist our members through these challenging times. WE HAVE BEGUN a new year, and it is a year that will be challenging and will see change in our industry. There is an air of uncertainty amongst many as to the future of construction in Ontario. Stimulus money...is it ending or not? The federal government has now indicated that it may not be. The Premier has said we must not take our foot off the accelerator too soon. There is still no sign of the private sector rebounding. There is a lack of any long-term plan to continue the battle against our infrastructure deficit. New regulations seem to be endless as every aspect of our lives is being subjected to new rules and regulations. In October, there will be an election. Will there be a change in government or a minority or a return of the current party? There is no doubt that 2011 will be challenging, and to face that challenge, OGCA has committed to a new three-year strategic plan. It is ambitious, but it will provide OGCA with the ability to assist our members through these challenging times. We are going to continue to be proactive, employ a Government Relations person, improve communication and information with our members and continue to be strongly pro-active in advancing the interests of our members and our industry. But it will take all of us to make this a success. No matter how busy you get, the support of our members is paramount to OGCA being successful. If we succeed, then we create a better environment for each of you. I know that in the stressful times ahead, you will be challenged as to the time and support you can provide, but it must be provided. We are your voice, your advocate, and your face to every level of government and to every buyer of our services in Ontario. The year is off to a busy start. Numerous tender issues arrived in the first two weeks of January and they are showing few signs of slowing down. The efforts of our safety committee and our work with joint industry groups like the WSIB Task Force and the Alliance have seen successes, and we will be active with these and other groups in addressing the big picture challenges. A refreshed website has been launched, more education and training programs are on the way, our webinar programs continue to grow and expand, and the Construction Symposium, after a one year hiatus, is back with a bang. Yes, the year is shaping up to be one of the most challenging yet and the OGCA, with your support, will meet those challenges. More importantly, we will be here to assist you in meeting those challenges. Clive N. Thurston OGCA President spring/summer 2011 the generals 9
