TECHLINK Around the Industry W New Speaker Kits aid recruitment efforts YANKEE DRYERS A comparison of steel and cast iron Yankee cylinders By Jörg Bauböck hile some pulp and paper production facilities have closed, the hundreds of mills in operation are highly automated, environmentally compliant, focused on innovative products and processes—and in need of the right employees. The industry must also attract new recruits to replace its aging workforce. In the next five years, one-fifth of the North American manufacturing workforce is set to retire, leaving paper and packaging companies scrambling for more than 4,500 new employees each year. To fill the gap, our industry will need engineers, chemists, IT professionals, and operators with education ranging from associate to graduate degrees. In response to this need, TAPPI, along with several companies and academic institutions, has begun a new recruitment initiative. As a first step, TAPPI has created “Careers in Paper” speaker kits which contain everything someone would need to make a presentation on pulp and paper industry careers to a high school class, club, or scout troop. The kit includes a PowerPoint presentation, a video, and brochures, and is available for download at www. These engaging materials can help anyone share information about our industry that highlights the exciting opportunities available.
