Cascades has permanently closed the Cascades Tissue Group plant in Toronto. Catalyst Paper will permanently close its Snowflake, Ariz., recycle mill, and its subsidiary the Apache Railway Company. Ilim Group will start up the new softwood pulp line at Bratsk, Russia, in December. International Paper plans to refurbish its Bogalusa, La., containerboard mill’s wastewater treatment plant. Mondi has acquired Nordenia, a German manufacturer of flexible packaging, plastic films and film-based products, and Duropack’s operations in Germany and the Czech Republic. Mayr-Melnhof Packaging, Austria, has acquired Plegacol, a Colombian folding carton producer located in Santiago de Cali. Norske Skog will convert a machine to coated grades at the Boyer, Australia mill, and shut down one newsprint machine at the Tasman New Zealand, mill. Orchids Paper Products received Dollar General’s 2012 Pride Award - Private Label Vendor of the Year. The $33-million sale of the Port Hawkesbury paper mill to Pacific West Commercial is complete. The mill plans to restart in October under the name Port Hawkesbury Paper. SCA has divested its 50% holding in the UK-based Aylesford Newsprint to the private equity company Martland Holdings. It will also likely close its Jönköping, Sweden, tissue mill. Smurfit Kappa Group will acquire Orange County Container Group for US$340 million. Södra will make 260 people redundant as part of its drive to reduce the group’s costs. Södra Cell will divest their mill at Follafoss. Sofidel has acquired U.S.-based Cellynne Holdings Inc. Sonoco has completed a $2 million upgrade at its Onslow County, N.C., materials recovery facility. 6 UPM has completed the sale of its closed Papierfabrik Albbruck GmbH mill in Germany to the German Karl Group. The U.S. Forest Ser vice Forest Products Laboratory opened its $1.7 million nanocellulose pilot plant in Madison, Wis. SUPPLIERS AkzoNobel will close sizing chemicals plants in Trollhättan and Borås, Sweden. Andritz: • Acquired Allied Environmental Solutions, Inc., Columbia, MD. • Will supply a PrimeLineCOMPACT II tissue machine with steel Yankee to Hebei Yihuocheng Commodity Co., China. • Will supply stock preparation systems for the new board machine to Fujian Liansheng Paper Co., in Longhai, Zhangzhou City, China. • Will supply a new Jetlace nonwovens production line for Precot Meridian Ltd., Coimbatore, India. • Has successfully started-up four tissue machines for Hengan Group, China, including the world’s largest steel PrimeDry Yankee (4.9  m diameter and 6.2  m shell length) in PM15 in Jinjiang. • Has received an order to supply a raw material preparation system for a new MDF production line being built by LLC Kastamonu Integrated Wood Industry, Russian Federation, a subsidiary of Kastamonu Integrated Wood Industry, Turkey. Metso: • Will begin personnel reductions and layoffs in Finnish units that will affect about 630 employees, with about 150 positions to be outsourced. • Will supply a PaperLab to JK Paper Ltd’s Rayagada paper mill in India. • Will rebuild a coater for Hansol Paper, South Korea • Along with Tieto will provide advanced control and optimization systems for the fiber lines at Mondi’s Syktyvkar mill in Russia. • Will supply Chenming Jilin, part of Shandong Chenming Paper Holdings Ltd., with the relocation and rebuild of a paper machine for the company’s new mill site in Jilin Province, China. • Has launched PressPolar, a new polyurethane roll cover for press rolls. • Will sell mechanical seals from Swedish seal manufacturer Huhnseal, under the brand of SealMax. Toscotec: • Will supply two new tissue machines to C&S Paper, China. • Has begun building the first 18 ft-dia Yankee dryer at its workshop in Marlia, Lucca (Italy). Voith: • Launched NipVision, an online and realtime measurement tool using the latest roll cover technology. • Has rebuilt Eilenburg PM 1 at Stora Enso Sachsen, Germany. • Will supply a new sack paper machine for Klabin’s Correia Pinto, Brazil, mill. • Will supply two bank note paper machines to Bank Note Paper Mill India, Mysore, India. • Has announced ProTect to bring safety to the measurement of press fabrics. • Has introduced the new Revolution press felt for board and packaging paper. • Will provide two tissue machines for the mill expansion of Metsä Tissue’s Krapkowice, Poland mill.
