This program aimed to provide significant energy cost reductions, mitigate maintenance costs and offer uniformity across the company’s signage portfolio without causing any delay in rectifying sign outages. Guitar Center’s interest in achieving these benefits was tempered by the upfront capital costs associated with retrofitting all signage in one time frame; hence, Guitar Center opted to retrofit its signage upon a maintenancetriggering event, or, as needed. This approach of retrofitting “as needed” led to an even greater challenge of having sign outages persist due to the lead times associated with scheduling service to identify repairs, as well as surveying signage for potential retrofit, performing ROI studies, material lead times and the scheduling of the retrofit. best PrActice: Upon meeting with Guitar Center’s national signage maintenance provider, a program was designed that avoided significant upfront capital and ensured the lead time of converting a sign would be consistent with the allowable time to repair it. The program included the following steps performed by the retailer’s service provider: 1. Surveyed all stores that had never been serviced to capture letter heights and depth of channel letters, identify if transformers were wired remotely or self-contained channel letters, etc. 2. Identified available utility rebates and filing requirements to qualify for incentives. 3. Provided a menu pricing schedule, including all associated costs, to retrofit each location’s signage (either by store or signage dimensions). 4. Included a payback analysis for each store that addresses energy savings, estimated maintenance savings, return on investment, etc. results: When Guitar Center stores’ report a service request for a signage repair, the company can immediately identify the costs and the ROI to retrofit the signage in real time. The company dispatches a request to retrofit the sign and the service provider is prepared to have the necessary materials, equipment and technicians on site within the standard SLA allowed for signage repairs. This practice is an effective way to retrofit Neon to LED signage at the time the signage requires service and makes the best use of Guitar Center’s capital, which in turn frees up additional funds to complete other projects.
