FOrMuLATiNg grEEN SOLuTiONS AUTHOR Mark Manfredi, Vice President COMPANY Advanced Power technologies chAllenge: A large national retailer with more than 7,000 locations was exploring ways to accomplish several objectives and challenged its facilities department to come up with solutions for the following: 1. Make changes in the store with high degrees of visibility to show customers the company’s commitment to being sensitive to the environment and a green company. 2. Reduce the money spent on consumable products the store uses. 3. Reduce the tremendous plumbing and cleaning costs related to restroom issues. Analysis showed brown tri-fold paper towels in the restrooms were being used at up to 10 times the recommended quantity. These towels were often flushed down the toilets and thrown into the urinals causing serious plumbing blockages, increasing maintenance costs. Employees were also faced with very distasteful restroom cleanup. best PrActice: High efficiency hand dryers were installed in and the paper towel dispensers were removed from the restrooms. A custom cover was used on each unit with the retailer’s logo as well as a factual message telling customers , “One ton of paper consumes 17 trees, 3 cubic yards of landfill and pollutes 20,000 gallons of water during manufacturing,” sending a message of ecological responsibility. results: Paper towel consumption was eliminated and plumbing issues were reduced by 97 percent resulting in considerable cost savings in the pilot locations. VeriFicAtion oF eFFiciency And sAVings cAPtured: The consumable savings provided a less-than-24-month return on investment factoring in electric usage, the dryers and installation. In some cases, the reduction in plumbing expense alone proved a return on investment of six months or less. The environmentally friendly message on the dryers engaged the customer and highlighted the company commitment to being ecologically responsible. 2012 Best Practices | 49
