TrANSFErriNg COMPACTOr MAiNTENANCE TO A SErviCE vENdOr AUTHOR dan Montoya, senior Manager, building services COMPANY the home depot chAllenge: Keeping The Home Depot compactors operational can be a challenge given the type of debris that is thrown away. The nature of the merchandise sold at THD stores is not good for the mechanical portion of a compactor. Cement, dirt, appliances, wood, steel, sand, chemicals and many other items end up in our compactors. Combine that with the high sales volumes and it creates a rough environment for the equipment. High-volume stores in the U.S. were averaging almost four reactive service calls per year. With small receiving areas, any extra debris that cannot be disposed of quickly becomes a problem for the store and the associates. best PrActice: THD began external compactor cleanouts using a service vendor in the top sales-volume stores. This cleanout had previously been tasked to store associates who were not always able to find the time to perform the cleanout correctly. The vendor comes quarterly and does a thorough external cleaning of the compactor. The entire compactor area is shoveled and swept clear and the debris is placed into plastic bags and cans and removed from the area. This allows any new debris to fall out of the unit’s exhaust ports instead of becoming trapped in the doghouse tearing up hoses, cylinders, and electronics. results: By implementing the cleanouts, the number of reactive service calls has been reduced and the sales associates are able to spend more time on the sales floor working customer facing issues. VeriFicAtion oF eFFiciency And sAVings cAPtured: Since the cleanups began, the repairs in the stores that receive this service have been reduced to fewer than two service calls a year. In addition to halving the reactive repair cost, this practice also reduces the need for open-top containers, which impacts the store’s bottom line. 68 | 2012 Best Practices
