IN YOUR INTEREST Retail Council of Canada helping retailers reduce energy and costs There really isn’t any argument amongst professionals within the industry that energy conservation and reduction initiatives have long since become a necessity. Retail Council of Canada is helping retailers reduce energy and costs. o help retailers reach the goal of reducing operating costs while improving their impact on the environment, Retail Council of Canada (RCC), in partnership with the Toronto Building Owners and Management Association (BOMA), are offering retailers easily accessible cash incentives as part of the BOMA Toronto Conservation and Demand Management (CDM) Program. What is the BOMA Toronto CDM Program? © I S TO C K P H OTO.C O M / E PA N T H A T A multi-million dollar incentive fund designed to assist building owners, operators and tenants to conduct electricity conservation projects within their real estate. Cash incentives are being made available to commercial, warehouse, retail, hospitality owners and tenants to reduce electricity usage in the City of Toronto. Who can participate? Retailers, whether they are members of RCC or not, that are tenants or owners of retail stores, corporate offices and headquarters, warehouses or distribution centres equal to or greater than 25,000 square feet in size and located within the borders of the city of Toronto and having a postal code beginning with the letter "M". Qualified electricity conservation retrofits include: Take advantage of the opportunity to reduce usage and costs. Lighting, sub-metering, motors, air conditioning, windows, insulation, control systems and many other conservation retrofits are being made available for buildings over 25,000 square feet. And up to $5,500 will be initially made available to qualified applicants to assist them in assessing the energy conservation opportunities within retail properties. RCC will assist retailers in the submission of their incentive funding application. What will RCC do on behalf of Toronto-area retailers? • Provide rebates to retailers for their successful completion of their facility’s retrofits • Utilize RCC’s energy consultant What do qualified retailers receive? Through a multi-channel marketing effort RCC will be tasked with further engaging the retail sector in Conservation & Demand Management by: • Meeting with retailers one-on-one to discuss the advantages of this program • Hosting in-person information sessions for retailers’ senior management teams, offering financial case studies, industry expert speakers, retailer’s presentations and more • Facilitating the screening and application process • Identifying available government grants • Leveraging the associations own publications, website, committees and events to promote this project • Profile retailers’ success stories There is $5,500 available for each retail location over 75,000 square feet, which is broken down as follows: • $3000 is given for a facility energy screening – managed by RCC • RCC will provide each location with an energy reduction report that identifies all potential upgrades along with available government grants • If the retailer agrees to proceed with the upgrades, the $2,500 is allocated for the application process What are the next steps? • Contact RCC to learn more about the BOMA Toronto CDM Program and related rebates • Interested retailers should attend a retailer-only information session at the end of April If you're already aware of the BOMA Toronto CDM Program and are interested in setting up a screening process, contact Matt Hall, Manager, Member Relations, Retail Council of Canada at or 416-922-0553 ext. 319. 12 | C A N A D I A N R E TA I L E R | M A R C H /A P R I L 2 010 | http://www.ISTOCKPHOTO.COM/EPANTHA
