| RCC: in your best interest RETAIL COUNCIL OF CANADA THE GOAL RCC strives to help make retail the safest work environment in the country Setting W ithout a goal to measure against, it’s often extremely difficult for any organization to celebrate the victories when they’re achieved. And, considering the fact that the retail industry is one which focuses first and foremost on servicing the needs of people, Retail Council of Canada’s (RCC) Safety Group believes that it’s time to challenge the entire industry to set the goal of becoming the safest industry in the country. “Health and Safety in the retail sector continues to make strides,” says Matthew Hall, RCC’s Senior Manager, Member Programs, “but there is still much more that can be done to ensure an even safer environment for retail employees.” Overseeing the association’s member programs, Hall has been responsible for the association’s Safety Group program for the past five-plus years, and plays a significant role with respect to its tremendous success. The program has not only decreased workplace injuries and lost time for retail employees, but has also returned more than $6 million in rebates to participating members since the launch of the program in 2006. “I’ve been extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to develop our Safety Group program with members over the past number of years,” says Hall. “During my many store visits and location audits I’ve met a number of unsung heroes that should be recognized because of the passion they have for protecting not only their customers, but their entire staff as well. These individuals take on the daunting task of developing innovative strategies to ensure that every one of their workers who arrive at the workplace ends up going home at night, safely.” These individuals whom Hall speaks of continue to adapt amid the fast paced and ever changing health and safety landscape. “The importance of health and safety for us has become a part of what we do,” says Linda Klassen, National Health and Safety Manager, The Brick Warehouse LP. “It’s something that we always focus on, and has changed the emphasis of our whole company. Safety is now recognized as a driver of productivity and employee engagement.” Speaking of the importance of RCC’s Safety Group, Klassen believes that collaboration on issues is critical to decreasing workplace injuries and lost time. “We learn from each other and we 14 | canadian retailer | spring 2011 |
