Canadian Retailer - July/August 2010 - (Page 4)

| publisher's desk Celebrating Retail ecognition. It’s something that all too often isn’t offered to those who deserve receiving it. And it’s something that, unfortunately, is lacking in nearly every department at every workplace within every industry in the country. We as professionals, on the best of days, simply have a tendency to, not necessarily overlook achievement and success, but to take it for granted as an expected outcome of our day-to-day business and ongoing initiatives. At Retail Council of Canada, we are at the epicentre of the retail industry. Everyone at the association has the privilege and opportunity to engage with the many retail touch-points involved, from suppliers and vendors to the many professionals spread across multiple departments, who comprise every retail organization of every size and format in every region and province across the entire country. We are fortunate enough to be in the position to serve and interact with our members every day, and believe that recognition and reward for achievement and success is not only necessary, but critical to the continued growth and progression of the retail industry in Canada. That’s why each year RCC honours retail’s groundbreakers and innovators at the Excellence in Retail Awards (ERA) as part of STORE – Canada’s annual retail conference. Within this issue of Canadian Retailer we celebrate achievement across all aspects of retail operations, by highlighting the award winners in every category including in-store merchandising, online retailing, employee development, health and safety, loss prevention, marketing and advertising, store design, technology innovation, and three subcategories of corporate social responsibility – community, global and environment. We also pay tribute to some of retail’s most respected leaders: the Distinguished Canadian Retailer of the Year, the Lifetime Achievement recipient, the Canadian Retail Hall of Fame Inductee, and the recipient of the Ambassador Award.
