HENRY SINGER AWARDS CELEBRATE 20 YEARS
n October 4 the University of Alberta’s School of Business presented Heather Reisman, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Indigo Books & Music Inc., with the Henry Singer Award. The evening also marked the twentieth anniversary of the school’s annual recognition of exceptional leadership in the retailing and services sectors. According to the school, “The Henry Singer Award recipient is as committed to building their community as they are to building their business. The recipient possesses the gifts of fairness, humour, empathy, and respect for and acceptance of all people. He or she shows a deep commitment to family, friends, associates and the community.” This year’s recipient, Heather Reisman, has led Indigo to become the largest book retailer in Canada with revenues just over $1Billion. She also oversaw the founding of Kobo Inc. by Indigo, and has helped secure its standing as a global eReading company which now ranks among the leaders in the emerging digital eReading industry. The Award, and evening’s event that helps commemorate it, celebrates leadership within the retail industry in memory of the late Henry Singer. And, as Paul McElhone, Associate Director, School of Retailing at the University of Alberta, points out, it also signifies the school’s continued commitment to the industry and its students. “The School started as a centre 20 years ago with the goal to align the university with the retail community to help enhance the profile of the industry,” he explains. “It began as a way to promote to students that there are a lot of great opportunities for students in retail.” PAST AWARD RECIPIENTS 2010 - Annette Verschuren, President, The Home Depot Canada 2009 - Chip Wilson, Chairman & Chief Product Manager, lululemon athletica 2008 - Wynne Powell, President & COO, London Drugs 2007 - Edward Kennedy, President & CEO, The North West Company 2006 - Christine Magee, President, and Stephen Gunn, Chairman and CEO, Sleep Country Canada 2005 - Robert Dutton, President & CEO, RONA 2004 - Jim Treliving and George Melville, Chairmen & Owners, Boston Pizza 2003 - Brian Hesje, CEO & Chairman, Fountain Tire 2002 - Steve Matyas, President, STAPLES Business Depot 2001 - Harry Buddle, CEO, Capital City Savings 2000 - John Forzani, Chairman & CEO, The Forzani Group Ltd. 1999 - Don James, CEO & Vice Chairman, Deeley Harley Davidson 1998 - David Bloom, Chairman & CEO, Shoppers Drug Mart 1997 - John Stanton, President, Running Room Canada Inc. 1996 - J.
