| REPORT TO MEMBERS RCC YEAR-IN-REVIEW 2011 SPECIAL: FROM THE PRESIDENT The year of moving forward VIGOROUS ADVOCACY, GREATER VALUE FOR MEMBERS IN 2011 2 011 may well be remembered as the Year of Moving Forward. With federal and provincial elections, raucous markets, and impassioned citizens, retailers saw new political landscapes, new fiscal realities, and new consumer behaviours. As members of the Retail Council of Canada community, we’re adapting to these changes, seizing great opportunities and moving forward - together. RCC’s advocacy work has protected the industry and our innovative programs and services have provided greater value to members of every size and category across Canada. It is my pleasure, on behalf of our dedicated volunteers, partners and staff across Canada, to share some of our collective achievements in 2011. Moving forward together, we are stronger. INDUSTRY-LEADING ADVOCACY Determined, forceful, and responsive are the words I use to describe RCC’s advocacy efforts in 2011. At Provincial Legislatures and the Federal Parliament, RCC’s team of government relations professionals brought the industry’s perspective to the rapidly evolving Canadian political landscape. Our access to decision makers and our association’s influence, combined with the respect that we’ve earned at all levels of the political process, has enabled the retail industry’s voice to be heard loud and clear on all matters of concern to the industry. Your membership investment enables RCC’s team to defend and advocate on your behalf at all levels of government across Canada. I’m proud to say that RCC scored important wins for retail in 2011. DEMANDING MOVEMENT ON TARIFFS AND DUTIES With federal tariffs on imported goods as high as 20 per cent, Canadians desperately need a new, competitive tax regime from our government. RCC mobilized quickly and aggressively to petition policy-makers to eliminate or substantially reduce Canadian import duties and build a more competitive environment for Canada’s retailers. On behalf of members: Our proactive advocacy campaign against unfair import tariffs and duties on consumer goods engaged senior government officials and made national news. In the New Year I will be speaking in front of the Senate Committee studying the Canada-U.S. price gap and will argue that for Canada to remain competitive, government needs to eliminate outdated duties on imported consumer goods. RCC’s Government Relations team took our message across Canada through regional programming and a campaign to educate consumers about the issues surrounding price parity.
