ASID STUDENT CHAPTER UPDATES: VIRGINIA/ ASID STUDENT CHAPTERS IN THE STATE OF VIRGINIA are doing well and keeping up with meetings and events. Students have been working hard, entering competitions, and searching for jobs and internships. This year’s Student Career Day at Radford University, held in February, was a great networking opportunity for ASID Virginia Chapter student members. Students and professionals attended in record numbers, which was an encouraging and rewarding experience as students were able to hear, speak with, and receive feedback from professionals. I personally want to thank all of those who participated, especially those professionals who took the time out of their day to be involved. RADFORD UNIVERSITY traveled to Richmond, Va., on April 2 where students visited KSA Interiors, Benjamin Moore VPC Outlet, and Glave & Holmes Architecture. Students were able to tour and interact with professionals in their environments while seeing how they work in the interior design field. In service to underclassmen, goodie bags were made for Radford sophomores taking the April 10 charette to show encouragement and support during their exam. A meeting with a guest speaker from the local chapter of USGBC was also held at the school. USGBC gave new insight into LEED and their organization’s work. USGBC subsequently participated in Radford’s Earth Day, sharing their knowledge of sustainability and biomimicry. VIRGINIA TECH is staying busy with meetings, service work and events while updating members with newsletters. Recent meetings have included various designers and guest speakers. In service to others, Virginia Tech participated in Relay for Life, as well as the College of Architecture and Urban Studies “Some Assembly Required”(SAR) event, both held on campus. In addition to SAR, an annual social event, Virginia Tech also held a campaign specific to their chapter, called Make the Switch, where students participated to create their own reusable shopping bag. JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY has elected their incoming officers elected for 2011. The university has remained active in the community by forming an Interior Design Relay for Life team, enabling the chapter and school to work as a team outside of the classroom. TIDEWATER COMMUNITY COLLEGE held membership kickoff meetings this year to help create interest and growth of the student chapter. There is anticipation and drive to strengthen and build this chapter. VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY is keeping up with meetings and member connections that allow them to share knowledge about interior design with one another. RHODEC INTERNATIONAL is back and running with their officers in place. They are already off to a great start with a newsletter, which strengthens their membership and communication to students. In their newsletter they communicate chapter news, as well as sharing some news and resources about the interior design field.
