STUDENT DESIGN CHALLENGE/ WHEN MICHAEL BRUNO, founder of 1stDibs and Drew McGukin, Student Representative to the Board for the ASID New York Metro Chapter met at a cocktail party in the spring of 2010, it was then that the idea for a new design challenge started to become a reality. Between tenants in a vacant showroom, the New York Design Center hosted a design charette using around 70 items from 1stDibs vendors in which students would compete for the top design. Participants came from seven area schools and were teamed up with other students, never having worked together before. There was only one hour to arrange the furniture before a team of movers would prepare for the next group to step in with their own plans. The team with the top design was featured on, but each student recieved images from the professional photographer for their own portfolio. With the design world changing constantly, judges Charlotte Moss, Jamie Drake, ASID, James Druckman and Michael Bruno found their ‘now’ design among today’s students and tomorrow’s designers. the american society of interior designers student magazine 22 ACCESS fall | winter 2010
