Sustainable Hospitality Design Competition
Th is competition gives students the
opportunity to showcase their design
skills with projects that use the very
best in sustainable design products and
practices. Sponsors JL Furnishings/
lone meadow and Valley Forge Fabrics
generously donated $5,000 awards each
to the winning undergraduate student
and the winning graduate student.
Competition judges included Melissa
Pyell, interior designer, Gensler; Becca
Dobosh, interior design associate, SERA
Hospitality Studio; and Barbara Best Santos, senior associate,
Gensler. Winners were honored during the 2014 Hospitality
Design Exposition and Conference (HD Expo) in Las Vegas this
past May. Here are the winning concepts:

Victor Lee, graduate winner, Illinois
State University

Lee's concept is housed in the Lin Department
Store, a five-story 1930s building by Japanese
architects in Tainan, his hometown and the
oldest city in Taiwan. Its Asian-influenced
Art Deco style was the perfect canvas for Lin's
design, which combines a European style with a
minimalist approach.
The EU Resort reflected Lin's influences in three ways, he
says: "First of all, being fascinated by European architecture,
interior design, and craftsmanship after a trip to Europe this past
summer, the centerpiece
and original design
inspiration came from
the Barcelona chair and
the Barcelona pavilion
by Mies van der Rohe.
Naming the resort with
the abbreviation 'EU' is a
way to pay homage to the
origin of my inspiration.
Second, 'Eu-' is the prefi x for many words with positive meanings
and connotations, such as euphoria, euphony, eucrasia, and even
eureka. That's the feeling that I want my design to bring to the
customers. Th ird, EU is pronounced 'you,' which is the life of
hospitality. You, the customer, are the reason why hospitality is a
business."

Alina Bungardean, undergraduate
winner, Ryerson School of Interior
Design

Lofty Pines SPA is located on an existing
property in the Carpathian Mountains in
Romania, Bungardean's home country. As she
explains: "Situated on the descending slope of

a mountain plateau, the shape
of the building mimics that of
the site. Green roofs shelter the
north, west and east façades,
blending the structure with
the environment. The building
is oriented south and both
façades are angled as to receive
maximum daylight, minimizing
the need for artificial lighting.
"Good insulation and high
thermal mass materials were used for the structure, exterior
cladding, and some interior applications. The interior design
furthers these architectural attempts by creating transparent
partitions that allow the natural light to reach areas that are
not in the proximity of the openings. Furniture and millwork is
either produced or sourced locally and most of the design features
showcase environmental concern through the use of reclaimed
or recycled materials. LED lighting and efficient plumbing
fi xtures and appliances were also used as a means of reducing
consumption."

Symmons Smart Scholarship

Th is newly formed $4,000 award courtesy
of Symmons Industries was presented at
the NEWH New Entrepreneurs networking
breakfast at HD Expo. The winner is:

Erica Killam, Pratt Institute

"In the spring of 2009 I joined the opening
team for a new resort called Amangiri, the
second U.S. property for Singapore-based luxury
resort company Amanresorts. As the personal
assistant to the husband and wife co-general
managers, I was the fi rst official employee hired
to be onsite, and I was in a unique position to
be intimately involved in nearly every aspect of the opening. The
operations, architectural, and general contracting staff worked
collaboratively from the same office for months to pull together
this multimillion dollar resort. In the months prior to and after
opening, I learned more about the realities of hospitality than I had
during four years of university.
"After Amangiri's opening, I left the property to experience the
opposite end of the resort spectrum-the Las Vegas mega-casino.
After several months in Vegas, I found myself with the Batali &
Bastianich Hospitality Group as a manager at Carnevino Italian
Steakhouse located in the Venetian and Palazzo complex. Being
immersed in high-volume operations only reinforced my belief in
the crucial relationship between design and operational success.
"My experiences have taught me that good operational
management skills are essential, but those results can be easily
undermined by deficiencies in the physical space. An intelligent
design can make all the difference when it comes to running an
operation efficiently-and the opposite is also true." ❙❘❚
