In Remembrance: Cliff Tuttle

Saying Goodbye
Cliff Tuttle, senior vice president at ForrestPerkins, passed
away in Houston in May after a brief illness. NEWH asked
friends, family, and colleagues to share stories about Cliff.
When I fi rst met Cliff Tuttle, I was instantly drawn to his warm and engaging personality, his
generosity of spirit, his dedication to the profession of design, and his talent. Over the years, my fi rst
impression has been confi rmed repeatedly as Cliff 's career and reputation became associated with
ForrestPerkins. Now, it is hard to imagine one without the other.
Th rough the difficult process of dealing with the illness and then loss of my dear friend and trusted
colleague, I have come to realize just how entwined Cliff 's spirit is in the people and projects of my
company. Clients loved Cliff for his wit, charm, positive energy, and creativity. He always put them fi rst
and they knew and appreciated that, rewarding us with repeat projects and loyalty. The many hotels
Cliff designed at ForrestPerkins stand as a testament to his immense talent. More so, the many young
designers he mentored, encouraged, and supported are his legacy. I am honored and proud to have
known Cliff and to have been counted among his closest friends. I miss him but find his influence all
around me.

Having had the privilege of calling Cliff my friend was one that I will always be grateful for. Whether discussing a design project,
enduring another board meeting, laughing hysterically during a wild cab ride, or simply sitting on his rooftop in shorts and flip flops,
Cliff was always the same: personable, brilliant, friendly, a bucket of fun, and inspirational. I will miss him, as will everyone else whose
life he touched.
I'm sure he would be humbled by and appreciative of all the remembrances and honors, but I'm equally sure he wouldn't want us to
wallow in our sorrow. I can hear him clearly saying, 'There's not a damn thing you can do about it, so you might as well just have a party!'
We should do just that.

Cliff was my mentor and dear friend for the past 13 years. We met in 2001 when I started working in the DC office of ForrestPerkins. At
the end of 2007, we moved across coasts and opened the San Francisco office together. I knew it would work because I was with a close
friend and he made coming to work every day a pleasure.
Cliff 's desire for giving back in the design community drove him to help start the San Francisco chapter of NEWH. One of my
favorite things about Cliff was that he had some of the best stories from his many years in design. There isn't a day that goes by that I
don't think about him and how he touched so many lives. He was very loved.

I met Cliff more than 18 years ago as we volunteered doing strategic planning for ASID. We became fast friends, even though we saw
each other maybe once a year. When I joined NEWH in the late '90s and got reacquainted with Cliff, he immediately drafted me (with
board approval) to help him do strategic planning/board training with him. The following year I became director of strategic planning/
board training on the international level. Many thanks to Cliff for getting me involved so quickly in NEWH, for believing in me, and for
being my friend. I will miss you.
