NEWH - Fall 2014 - 72

Chapter Highlights
Arizona

With three new dynamic members: Kristin Wolfe, fundraising; Mary Blanchard, vice
president/administration; and Shannon Vance, vice president/development, joining the
board, the chapter is working hard to develop new events and reinvent others to raise
more funds for scholarships this year.

1

The chapter's inaugural golf tournament in April was a great success due to the efforts of
Wolfe and Blanchard. Held at the McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, attendance
exceeded expectations, thanks in part to many out-of-state companies making the journey
for the event.
Next up is the chapter's annual bowling event on Friday, October 24th at AMF Bowl.
Because the event was becoming a bit staid, Scott Hegstad, president; Susan Crowder,
past president; and Wolfe introduced new event activities to appeal to even more
designers and their families, including a bowling pin decorating contest and team color
themes. Mystery Boxes, introduced last year, were such a huge fundraising success, that
the chapter is doubling the number this year.

Chicago

NEWH Chicago Chapter awarded $31,000 in scholarships this
year to nine deserving students out of 26 applicants. Recipients
range from students of hospitality management to interior
design.
Tricia Albertini
Harrington College Of Design
Interior Design
Scholarship Amount: $5,000
"I joined NEWH in January 2014 due to my recent desire to
pursue a career in the hospitality sector of interior design.
I have experienced joy and satisfaction when I have been
instrumental in helping design something. Being awarded
this scholarship is a great recognition of the work I have
completed and provides great encouragement to finish my
program strong."
Asha Brown
Baker College of Muskegon
Baking and Pastry Chief
Scholarship Amount: $3,000
"Being at the culinary school, they urge us to give back
to the community, which is something I live by. I have
participated in events raising money for battered women
and participated in baked good sales for other charities.
This scholarship to me would mean NEWH is giving back
to someone who plans to give back to her community full
circle."
Justin Brown
Harrington College of Design
Interior Design
Scholarship Amount: $3,000
"When I started my first semester of design school it
dawned on me that I could meld my two loves into
one career: hospitality plus design. Being a NEWH
scholarship grant recipient is undoubtedly an excellent
networking opportunity but far more importantly, the
financial assistance allows me to devote more time to my
course load and spend less time at work. By receiving this
scholarship I can finish my degree at Harrington, producing
the level of work that I know I am capable of. "
Amy Collins
Harrison College - Chef's Academy
Culinary Arts
Scholarship Amount: $3,000
"I am so proud and thankful for my education. This
scholarship helps immensely with the financial burden my
education has caused. I hope to be running my own kitchen
as a head chef and possibly opening my own restaurant. I
hope to build an empire and become a household name
within the culinary industry."

Eileen Driscoll
Triton College
Interior Design
Scholarship Amount: $5,000
"While many may focus on education as a potential
financial risk, I know it is necessary for my continued
personal and professional growth. The NEWH Chicago
chapter scholarship plays an invaluable role in my future as
I continue to strive for my goals."
Jordan Fons
Harrington College of Design
Interior Design
Scholarship Amount: $1,000
"After earning a BFA in Interior Design with a particular
focus in hospitality I plan to help the hospitality industry
to deliver their artistic visions. To have the support of
NEWH means prioritized time for significant course classes.
I would love nothing more than to give my well-needed
attention to Harrington during my last year of learning. "
Stephanie Kreps
Indiana State University
Interior Design
Scholarship Amount: $3,000
"My interest in design-whether of the natural or built
environment-remained consistent since my early years
and remains to this very day. This scholarship enables
me to continue my education as I am funding my college
expenses independently."
Mayra Proano
Kendall College
Culinary Arts
Scholarship Amount: $3,000
"Looking toward the future, I hope to have the power
to affect my local community in a positive way, help
to promote sustainability, support local agriculture,
and educate people about how we as consumers can
determine how our food is raised and cultivated. I hope
to one day own my own business and to be able to make
this kind of impact on the community. I look only to secure
scholarships to ensure I have the funds to complete my
work toward a bachelor's degree ."
Ramsina Youmara
Kendall College
Hospitality Management Scholarship Amount: $5,000
"The hospitality industry has always been an industry
that interested me because I have a passion for servicing
others. What sparked my passion most is being able to
be part of creating a memorable and enjoyable guest
experience. Receiving this scholarship was extremely
important to me because it allows me to achieve my dream
of working in a prestigious hotel as front desk manager
upon graduation."
