Chapter Highlights
Atlantic City/Greater Philadelphia

1

The chapter held its annual Chapter Scholarship
Awards Celebration and Fundraiser at Milk and
Honey Café in Philadelphia on Wednesday, October 16th. Attendees enjoyed an
evening of networking, an architecture discussion about the building and its concept,
raffle, and the presentation of scholarship awards to two Drexel interior design
students in honor of the chapter's 5th anniversary: Christina Mecca received a $5,000
scholarship, and Rachel Howren earned a $2,500 award. Thank you to all of our
Annual Chapter sponsors and Scholarship Awards Celebration sponsors, we could
not give back to the community if it were not for your consistent support. Also in
honor of the anniversary, photos from the last five years were collected and shared
with both present and past chapter members on social media. To date the chapter
has awarded $7,500 in scholarship monies and has held its signature Product
Runway event in both Atlantic City and Philadelphia.

Introducing the 2014 NEWH UK Board

January 1st saw an interesting and dynamic change in the
management team for the UK chapter. After four years as
president (which is a record in the UK) Lynn Fisher retired to
become past president handing the reigns to me, the first evermale president. This would be a daunting prospect for any man,
attempting to fill the shoes of a highly dynamic woman who has
taken the organization from a small club to a much more serious
chapter holding a position on the main board of NEWH, Inc. What
makes it easier is that since there has never been
a male president before there is no benchmark for
performance, therefore I can remain an anathema
and hopefully pull the wool over everyone's eyes
on my performance! The job also comes with a
large pinch of excitement as NEWH UK feels like it
is on the precipice of becoming a serious contender
in the UK hospitality market as a professional
organization. Lynn has left me with a fantastic deal
ready to close.
Our new board includes some serious gems of
the industry. Rebakah Ellis becomes our new vice president who
has had an extensive career recently with Charles Leon Associates
as a senior FF&E designer. She brings a fantastic enthusiasm for
the association and has been running the membership program
for the last year. She will also take over from me when I collapse
in two years time. Jonathan Young of OW Hospitality, who worked
with me at Brintons for many years so I know exactly how talented
he is, brings a new lease of life to our parties as events director
and anyone who has spent time with him at HD Expo in Vegas
will know this man knows how to party! Our other new recruit is
Shirley Jenkins of Fileturn who joins as marketing and development
director, which is the position I just left. Shirley is a dynamo, adding
electricity and excitement to everything she touches.

As well as our new recruits I have also managed to retain a
few of the stars from last year who Lynn recruited during her
tenure. Hannah Rogers from Ulster Carpets, as well as being an
outstanding carpet designer, is also the social media director for
NEWH UK. Likewise retaining the demure council of Caroline Banks,
a brilliant art consultant, has been a huge relief in the form of our
scholarship director. Caroline formerly handled our sustainability
role and was a strict police on what water we drank at meetings so
I am very thankful we have moved her to such a key position. We
also retained Beverley Petzing of Artimede as our secretary who
keeps us all in order and ensures we comply
where we need to. Our first event of 2014 was
at the Artimede showroom and proved a huge
success (photo shown). And finally for those
of you wondering who this is pontificating my
name is Julian Brinton, I was born in the sixties
wrapped in carpet and now run a carpet
brand called Wool Classics.
So what has the next 48 months got instore
for the UK? We learned a valuable lesson
last year when we tried to organize a ball in
the Design Centre (Europe's largest design center), however we
struggled to get support and had to cancel. Both price, timing, and
economy played their role in explaining the result. So this year we
need to be more focussed on organizing smaller more affordable
events whilst making sure we still make money and have fun. My
greatest confidence comes from the fact that I have surrounded
myself by consummate professionals and plan to remain the same
myself. That, together with the clear guidance of Lynn, should
ensure we stay ahead of the game!
I look forward to working with you all over the next 24 months.
- Julian Brinton, President, NEWH UK
