NEWH - Summer 2014 - 20

Scholarships

Two of a Kind
NEWH, Inc. continues to award multiple scholarships throughout the year
FR-One

The eighth annual FR-One Scholarship Award (a $3,000 honor)
is posthumously sponsored by Harvey Nudelman and Fabricut.
Each year it is given to a student pursuing a career affi liated with
the hospitality industry in interior design. Th is year's winner,
Melanie Murata, a student at Florida State University, was
honored at BDwest in San Diego. Here's a bit about Melanie:
Melanie was born in Lima, Peru and moved to Naples, Florida
at the age of six. As a senior at Barron Collier High School, she
wrote an honors thesis on sustainable design and discovered she
wanted to pursue interior design as a profession. She studied
architecture, artistic
vision, and Italian in
Florence, Italy, and
traveled extensively
during her fi rst
semester at Florida State
University. She moved
back to Tallahassee and
was officially admitted
into the interior
design program. As a
sophomore,. Melanie
Matt DeShantz and Mindy
interned for Kira
Shannon of Fabricut with Murata
Krumm International
Design and the Sechrest
Design Company. Th rough her leadership and diligence as
president of the FSU Interior Design Student Organization
and the ASID Student Chapter at Florida State University, she
received the 2013 ASID National Student Leadership Award in
Los Angeles last June. Additionally, Melanie placed second in
the IIDA International Student Competition at NeoCon 2013.
She graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor's
degree in interior design in August 2013. Melanie was awarded
a research and teaching assistantship and is currently an
interior design graduate student at Florida State University.
During her time as graduate student,. Melanie interned with
Elliot Innes Marshall Architects and worked on education
projects. She is an Adobe Student Representative and continues
to provide mentorship to the student organization executive
board. Her graduate research focuses on designing pop-up retail
environments that create social impact through human-centered
design, experiential solutions, and branding. After graduation
in August this year, she plans to join a multidisciplinary design
fi rm that specializes in hospitality and retail. She also plans
to contribute to the advancement of the profession through
continued participation in professional organizations.

ICON of Industry

Each year NEWH gives out its most prestigious award, the ICON
of Industry, to leaders of the manufacturing side of hospitality,
those who have uniquely impacted the industry through their
innovative work, consistently dedicated their time and efforts
to community or industry outreach through education and/or
corporate giving, and been doing business in hospitality for more
than 30 years. In return, two scholarships are awarded in the
awardee's honor, to a winner and runner-up, who have completed
half the requirements for a degree that will lead to a career in
hospitality interior design or architecture, have a 3.0 GPA, and
have participated in an industry internship. Here are excerpts
from the honorees' essays.

Alexandra Kern, master's program
at Savannah College of Art and
Design (SCAD)
"I have always had an interest in art and
design. Whether I was sketching, drawing
floorplans, or creating buildings with Legos,
I always knew I wanted to be creative. Th is
led me to pursue a degree as an interior
designer...I have consistently been asked
what career path I would like to take upon graduation. Each time
I have answered, 'I would like to pursue a career in hospitality
design.' After graduation, my goal is to obtain a position as an
entry-level designer at one of the top hospitality design fi rms.
Once I land my dream job, I plan to work my way up in the
company, travel, and gain new experiences to better my designs."

Amanda Krueger, master's program
at Florida State University
"Growing up, I was very close to my
grandfather, who even through the struggles
of war and fi nancial limitations, always
stressed the importance of serving others
and working diligently to meet your goals.
The time spent with him at such a young age
instilled a strong work ethic and determination in me to succeed.
I have found that a career in interior design provides me the
opportunity to, like my grandfather, take care of those around me
and positively impact lives. I love the creativity involved and the
ability to serve a variety of populations. Designing interiors has
the capacity to impact and shape a life, a population, and in turn
the future. Th is love has led me to seek a path in both hospitality
and non-profit work because of the extensive amount of people
these two paths can globally reach."
