Color Wars
A quickening trend cycle makes picking the right hue more important
than ever
When guests enter a property, they take
in the furniture and flooring but it's
the color that sets the mood. Vibrant
pops of color or soft neutrals project the
personality of each property, and the
hues that dominate venues are often a
part of the cultural Zeitgeist.
Designers know that the right
color can be an accent in a room or
complement bold patterns throughout
a space. The ability of color to conjure
up nostalgic feelings is often part of the
overall design concept. "Color trends in
hospitality design are now blending with
a reflection to the past and a perspective
on the future," explains Laura Roman,
director of design for Milliken &
Company's hospitality business.
Roman points to shifts in the economy
as a factor that moves the color scale.
When things are uncertain, people
choose more conservative colors, but "as
we see optimism with the economy, we
are noticing more bold colors and prints
in fashion, setting a mood that is more
eclectic and hopeful," she explains.
