them and make them look pretty on the spot. I went to Las Vegas
on Christmas Eve and had never seen a place like that except
for Versailles. We got paid very well, and a thank you letter, and
that's when we realized we should be focusing our business on
hotels."
And so the alliances with well-known hotel brands, designers,
and purchasers began. Vaughan Benz has now produced wood
and upholstered furniture, from nightstands and dressers,
to headboards and conference room tables, for the likes of
Mondrian, Montage, and Andaz. They've furnished rooms for
Bellagio, worked with Four Seasons properties throughout the
world, including the recently opened Four Seasons Hotel Lion
Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, and their ties with Ritz-Carlton
are strong. Guestroom renovations at the New York Hilton,
Loews Hollywood, and the Halekulani in Honolulu were recently
completed, while the La Quinta Resort & Club in the Palm
Springs, California area; the Grand Wailea in Maui; the Hard
Rock Hotel and Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and a top-to-bottom
renovation of the Arizona Biltmore are on the boards.
"Super high-end residential is pretty good preparation for
these types of hospitality projects," says Vaughan, Vaughan
Benz's CEO. "We learned a lot about perfectionism."
When they started in the 1980s, shiny lacquer was all the
rage. "As they say, everything that was once old is new again,
and shiny lacquer is back, but this time it is a durable catalyzed
polyurethane or polyester finish with the same look but much
greater durability," Benz explains. "Very pale wood finishes are
also back; then the look was called 'bleached and pickled' and
often was heavily whitewashed, opaque, and had a Southwestern
type look; now, for contemporary furniture, designers sometimes
prefer open grain natural woods such as oak that are often
bleached and sometimes wire brushed," Benz explains.
Technology has also had a profound impact on Vaughan
Benz's custom furniture. "Everyone has devices like iPads, and
connectivity and the availability of outlets are important to
guests," says Vaughan. "Because all the hotels have flatscreens
now, there is the solution of combining a desk and dresser
or minibar cabinet to frame the TV. On the opposite side,
headboard walls and nightstands are integrated."
Sustainability is important to the company, and whenever
possible their furniture provides LEED credits. They embrace
low VOC finishes; use FSC-certified wood and/or reconstituted

veneer made from plantation-grown trees, which are rapidly
renewable resources; and when glued to FSC-certified medium
density fiberboard, the substrate is made of recycled wood
products. "It's the best for making contract furniture, and it's
environmentally friendly," points out Vaughan.
Although Vaughan Benz also manufactures in Mexico,
China, Indonesia, and maintains a Shanghai office, they take
great pride in being a U.S. company first. "We have a factory here
that we never closed, even during the recession. We do all our
project management and customer service here and it's the base
for our carpenters," says Benz. "It's where we make our oneof-a-kind pieces like lobby tables and much of our upholstery.
Furniture is made offshore, but we basically take care of all the
servicing here. It could be a model room but it also could be,
'Let's work out this detail and finish and teach our staff in Asia
how to do it.'"
When they were forced to relocate their offices after the LA
riots, instead of a brand new building Vaughan Benz chose to
renovate the mid 20th-century Carnation dairy processing plant
in downtown LA. "It was a cool adaptive reuse project," notes
Benz, "but more importantly we kept jobs here and even created
more." ❙❘❚
