NEWH - Fall 2015 - 14

Scholarships

With Honor
Meet the NEWH scholarship recipients recognized at HD Expo in Las Vegas in May
Jessica Shepard, Harrington College of
Design
Scholarship: NEWH Symmons Smart
Scholarship Design Competition

Th is $4,000 scholarship,
sponsored by Symmons
Industries, is a faucet design
competition awarded to a
student pursuing a degree in
hospitality, interior design,
or architecture and awarded
at the NEWH Annual
Expo Breakfast: The Young
Entrepreneurs.
"Crik is a modern lavatory
faucet designed to reduce
water use while minimizing
the amount of strain on the
user and creating a soothing
experience," Shepard says.
"The faucet head collects
and evenly distributes water,
which is then released in a
waterfall perpendicular to the
user to maximize the amount
of water dispersed on the
user's hands.
"After working as a server
for over a decade, the constant
factor I observed, which
continues to resonate with me
today, is hospitality design's
unique ability to bring a
moment of joy to the client.
A well-designed space is an experience that allows the guest to
break away from daily stresses and provides them with a microvacation. For this reason, I would love to continue my career
designing in the hospitality industry and my involvement with
NEWH.
"I would like to thank Symmons for partnering with NEWH
and for sponsoring such an incredible scholarship and design
competition. Th is was an extremely fun and interesting
challenge."

Olivia Marcellay, Savannah College of Art
and Design
Scholarship: NEWH Harvey Nudelman
Scholarship

Also awarded during
the NEWH Annual
Expo Breakfast, a
$5,000 scholarship
sponsored by Fabricut
Contract and FROne-in honor of
former Fabricut
president, the late
Harvey Nudelman,
who passed away in
2013-and awarded to
a student pursing an
interior design career
in the hospitality
industry.
"I graduated in
2005 with a BFA in
interior design, and
I worked in the field for several years until the economy went
into a recession in 2008," Marcellay says. "During the recession,
I supported myself by working in another field. [Once] the
economy had recovered and there were once again jobs, I felt I
was no longer qualified because of the technological advances.
"I felt like I needed to go back to school, but there were factors
holding me back. College is expensive, and it would require
me to take out loans; I would be older than most students; and
I knew that studying for an MFA would consume most of my
time and trying to work and generate an income while in school
would be difficult. I also thought about how much I wanted this
opportunity and how exciting it would be to go back to school. I
just told myself 'yes,' and did it.
"When I received the call that I won this scholarship, I cried.
Th is is a huge opportunity for me and has already propelled me
forward in a positive direction. I think about the future and how
I want to help design and work on projects to make the world a
better and more beautiful place. I think about all the challenges,
and then I think about how much I want it. I am telling myself
'yes,' and I am going to do it."
