Design 101 Hotel Bar

Custom Connection
A creative solution capitalizes on a Chicago hotel's untapped space

CHALLENGE:
An open space adjacent to a walkway connecting the Hyatt Regency, McCormick Place to Chicago's McCormick Place convention center
was a valuable but underutilized space, so Hyatt tapped locally based Ideation Studio-which had previously worked on the Hyatt Regency
Chicago-to turn the pie-shaped footprint into revenue-generating amenities for the property.

SOLUTION:
Ideation Studio created Point of Interest
(POI), a multipurpose space combining a
full-service bar, lounge, and casual meeting
area. "The solution focused on connectivity
on many different levels," says project
principal Jennifer Nemec. "Because the
property is slightly isolated, we wanted
to build connectivity with the cultural
diversity associated with Chicago. We
created architectural elements that feature
integrated graphic maps, which highlight
such areas as Pilsen, Chinatown, Greektown,
and Lincoln Park. These were all tied
together with a stylized transit map showing
the points of interest and their relationship

to our newly created POI bar."
Representing that connectivity through
technology was also an important part
of the project. "To take advantage of
the spaces located in the exiting path of
convention attendees, we created both
recharging zones and meeting areas,"
Nemec explains. "They can recharge
handhelds while stopping to recharge their
own battery with a beverage or light snack.
Semi-private meeting pods allow guests
to put imagery up on screens to share
information.
"Distinct zones were carved into the
interior space created by seating alcoves for
individual meetings, vertical architectural

pylon shapes to define the bar area, and
a standup eating zone. In keeping with
the theme of cultural diversity, materials
were selected that had a little dissidence
in colors, fabrics, and shapes, to support
the variety and richness of cultures that
intermingle in Chicago.
"This space captures the many
personalities of the city in an equally
welcoming embrace," she says. ❙❘❚
