One-on-One with
Deborah Herman
NEWH ambassador and founder
of Fabric Innovations

How did you become involved with NEWH?
I lived in Los Angeles the founding year of NEWH, and all their
activities were extremely educational and well attended. It was
the first hospitality networking organization of its kind with
immediate success. I spent the first two years on the scholarship
committee and absolutely loved meeting all the college liaisons
to begin gathering our first scholarship applicants.
What has NEWH done for you, both personally and
professionally? 
NEWH has given me friends in every city, wherever there is a
chapter. I have had the unique opportunity to be mentored by
such hospitality giants. Professionally, I have been exposed to
so many educational seminars and have seen so much growth in
our scholarship recipients.
Can you talk a bit about Fabric Innovations' involvement with
NEWH scholarships and their importance to the industry?
Fabric Innovations has been a Legacy Scholarship donor in a
three-year commitment for $10,000 per year. I have so enjoyed
the young people we have met through this commitment-it
is such a great experience to get to know our scholarship
recipients.
 
How valuable was it to you to be named the NEWH 2015 ICON
of Industry?
I believe this is the most prestigious vendor award in the
industry. It means a lot to me as a solely woman-owned business
as well as being the youngest-ever recipient.

Tell us a bit about Fabric Innovations and what's new.
Fabric Innovations has 10 new product launches coming up
before December. We are now officially in the upholstery fabric
business, as well as vinyl, and have also hired a new national
sales manager, which is thrilling. Our new website is being
launched on October 15th.
 
What is your business outlook for the next year or two?
I think this will be an all-out career high. Our year-to-date is
outstanding and there is more to come.
 
Latest travel highlight or plan?
We just booked Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas with the family for
Christmas-double yay.
 
Trend or movement you are paying attention to in the industry?
One you'd wish would go away?
Image/digital specifications can make you crazy: 'Here's the
picture, you write the specifications-good luck.' Other than
that, there are some of the most creative new products out there
that we can manufacture. It is exciting and fun and fresh.
When you aren't working or at an NEWH event, where can we
find you?
Holding hands with my husband with a big smile on my face. ❙❘❚
