Awarding Excellence
Getting to know the recent NEWH scholarship recipients
Alex J. Knodel, University of Cincinnati
Scholarship: NEWH/Clifford R. Tuttle
Scholarship

Cliff Tuttle, senior vice president at
ForrestPerkins, passed away in Houston
last May after a brief illness. Tuttle served
on the NEWH board of directors for many
years and received the NEWH Person of
Excellence Award in 2009. The Clifford
R. Tuttle Scholarship was established in
his name and is awarded by NEWH at
Hospitality Design magazine's Platinum
Circle Awards Gala.
"Being awarded the NEWH/Clifford R.
Tuttle Scholarship has been an incredible aid in my education. Not
only has the NEWH scholarship assisted me fi nancially, but my
participation in NEWH has also allowed me the opportunity to
meet, work, and communicate with so many incredible people in
the hospitality design industry," Knodel says. "I've enjoyed NEWH
philanthropic events, designer mentorship, and unmatched
educational experiences throughout the past two years. Many
thanks go out to everyone who has had a part in my growth as an
emerging young designer."

Camila Bayly, Cornell University's School of
Hotel Administration
Scholarship: NEWH/Fabric Innovations
Legacy Scholarship

Thanks to a $30,000, three-year scholarship
commitment from Fabric Innovations,
NEWH will award the $10,000 scholarship
each year during Hospitality Design
magazine's Platinum Circle Awards Gala
to a deserving student pursuing hospitality
management.
"I am thankful for NEWH selecting
me as the recipient of the NEWH/Fabric
Innovations Legacy Scholarship," Bayly says.
"I am sincerely grateful to receive your
support for my college endeavors and
for the amazing opportunities that
come with.
"As a student at Cornell's School of Hotel Administration, I'm
able to form friendships that I know will later become a solid
network of professionals. I am fortunate to see fi rsthand the true
importance of the hospitality industry's network. I am incredibly
thankful for the industry's support and mentorship of young adults
like myself starting a career in hospitality.

"I was fi rst exposed to the industry through my family and their
work endeavors. As a child, they were my fi rst role models, and I
was so eager to take part in their conversations regarding hotels
and hotel operations. I knew nothing about service, but I was
determined to someday be able to make important contributions
at the dinner table discussions. Today, as I look to the future and
past that dinner table, I hope that someday I will be able to make
important and sustainable contributions to the industry.
"Th roughout the years, my passion for service has been fueled
from interactions with professionals that provided me with
guidance and advice. The industry's culture of assistance and
encouragement inspires me every day and makes me eager to
pursue a career in the field of hotel development."

Tara Simone Headley, Savannah College of
Art and Design
Scholarship: NEWH ICON of Industry

Each year NEWH gives its most prestigious
award, the ICON of Industry, to leaders
in hospitality manufacturing who have
impacted the industry and done business
in hospitality for more than 30 years. The
2014 ICON of Industry was awarded to
Bob Thomas from Signature Hospitality
Carpets, while Tara Headley was the $5,000
winner of the NEWH ICON of Industry
scholarship. Headley was honored at the
34th annual Gold Key Cocktail Ceremony
in conjunction with IHMRS and BDNY trade fair and conference
and will be celebrated in May at Hospitality Design's HD Expo in
Las Vegas. Katherine Timmerman of Florida State University will
be awarded the NEWH ICON of Industry Honorable Mention
scholarship.
"I am currently a graduate student at the Savannah College of
Art and Design working on my thesis toward a Masters in Fine Art
in interior design. I come from a small island nation of Barbados
where I was born and raised, later moving to the U.S. to pursue my
college education," Headley says.
"I have made it a point to become involved in many interior
design organizations including ASID, IIDA, and NEWH. As
president of the student chapter in undergrad, I aimed to bring
together students and professionals for the advancement of peer
communication and networking in the industry. I am currently the
student liaison for the NEWH Atlanta chapter.
"The 2014 NEWH ICON of Industry scholarship has allowed
for major growth both personally and in my career. It has opened
doors to network with high-level industry professionals and
become deeply involved in the design community. It is truly an
honor and a privilege to be recognized by NEWH, and I hope to
continue this relationship well into my professional career."
