She has turned down some high-profile companies, choosing
instead to "work with partners where we can create a new narrative
that enhances both stories and works for our industry," she says.
Often, too, companies have to be open to the out-of-the-box
proposals from designers. When Durkan is embarking on a new
partnership, the company starts by issuing broad guidelines then
draws the development down to the strongest message, says Mark
Page, Durkan's senior director of color and design. The goal,
beyond a beautiful and well-received product, is the relationships
that spring from fruitful collaborations. Page points to the

company's work with Virginia Langley and Stacy Garcia as valued
partnerships that continue to grow. For Durkan, the benefit of
collaborations is twofold: They validate the products the flooring
company releases to the market, and they can also grow the
customer base when partnering with a proven collaborator with a
broad market history.
"Collaboration spreads our design sphere of influence
and breaks down walls with new approaches," says Scott.
