NEWH - Winter 2015 - 22

Sustainability Point of View
You lead online seminars around the topic, right?
I launched HOTELS+GREEN 44, a platform for bringing together
a community of thought leaders around sustainability in the
hospitality sector. Our seminars are online at
www.hotelsplusgreen.com.
You're also writing a book.
Creating Sustainable ROI for Hotels outlines 30 reasons why
creating a sustainable hotel does not have to cost more and,
conversely, how doing so can lead to savings, profitability, and
increased brand loyalty.
Do you see a positive change in our industry around sustainable
ideas?
When it comes to sharing knowledge on sustainability, I like
to get the message out in a positive, not preachy, way. It's about
easing into it and empowering individuals. You can't make it an
all-or-nothing prospect or it's too daunting; every bit of change
helps and you can keep progressing.
What's the key to ROI and sustainable design?
The key to sustainable ROI is getting the collective hotel team on
board early on in the planning phase. Considering sustainable
options from the beginning with an integrative team approach
can actually reduce overall operating costs over time-and
sustainable ROI timelines, fortunately, are getting shorter.

What experiences have most influenced your point of view?
Being a female architect, an entrepreneur, a mom, and completing
a 50-mile solo trek to Machu Picchu three years ago over a
16,000-foot pass. Besides pushing me out of my comfort zone, it
also grounded me. Being more in tune with nature and a sense
of place reconnected me to my 'soul' purpose. I live in hope and
knowledge-creating and inspiring me with my design colleagues
to fi nd balance between great design and being socially aware
of the impact we have, not doom and gloom. When it comes to
sustainability, we are all part of a solution. I see my responsibility
as a designer to do my part, and do my best, always coming from a
lifelong learning mindset.
What are your top three goals for NEWH Sustainable Hospitality?
1. Continue to develop relevant information around sustainability
to educate the design community
2. Relook at our past committees and what the future can be to
metric ourselves and be transparent
3. Integrate with more design schools nationally and
internationally to keep us fresh and forward thinking

What's on your design bucket list?
I would like to design a sustainable eco-resort infused with
biophilic design principles that would serve as a learning tool to
the design community, proving that thoughtful, beautiful design
and environmental acumen does not mean living without. ❙❘❚
