Dynamic Duo
A dual-brand waterfront project offers a unique design opportunity

T

he SpringHill Suites & Residence Inn Bayfront Downtown
in San Diego, sitting on the historic Lane Field Ballpark
site, was a unique project in its duality: Marietta, Georgiabased Design Directions International (DDI) was tasked
with realizing both brands while integrating them seamlessly
in one common lobby and F&B area. Design criteria put forth
by the client-Hensel Phelps Development and Construction-
was to create an interior indigenous to the waterfront locale
and the hotel's vibrant surrounding neighborhood, says Buddy
McDowell, president of DDI, who worked closely with John

Portman and Associates, the architecture fi rm for the project.
"The combined dual-brand character of this hotel allowed us
to go beyond the normal brand standard, giving us the design
flexibility to create a fresh, unique, and custom design that
relates to the local and industrial architecture of the building
and the urban chic location."

In the hotel's lobby and F&B area, exposed concrete columns
and floor-to-ceiling windows bring the outside in.
