To that end, bold colors and clean lines dominate. In the
lobby, industrial gray walls, polished concrete floors, and a white
painted ceiling provide a backdrop to modern blue and yellow
seating, suspended blue panels, and a custom area rug. A striking
yellow accent wall across from the lobby entrance draws guests
to three illuminated lucite registration pods. Exposed concrete
columns "give an exterior feel to
the interior," while floor-to-ceiling
windows allow for plenty of natural
light and a view of both the San Diego
cityscape and the bay.
"Blue represents the SpringHill
Suites brand and yellow represents the
Residence Inn," explains McDowell,
and the colors continue throughout
the space, including the elevator lobby
and hotel corridors. In the SpringHill
Suites guestrooms, a warm gray and
blue carpet complements the blue
vinyl headboard that acts as an accent
wall. Residence Inn guestrooms boast
the same soft carpet pattern in yellow
and gray, while casegoods are finished
in a custom warm gray stained finish.
Brand colors flow outside as well; a

bright yellow exterior column visually divides the two areas of the
400-room, 17-story structure.
Designing separate wings that seem to mirror one another
creates visual interest and continuity, while melding the two brands
in the clean, airy common spaces make for "a functionally unique
design and a very exciting project to work on," says McDowell. ❙❘❚
