Scholarship Stories
Thomas Hobbes
United Kingdom Chapter
On June 25, NEWH United Kingdom awarded its fi rst scholarship bursary. A panel of five
judges reviewed work from students in their second year of study in architecture and design.
As part of their project proposals, students were asked to design a hotel and office space
next to the Tate Modern on the South bank of the River Thames in London. The winner,
architecture student Thomas Hobbs, provided a strong solution "designed to push the concept
of a healthy work and life balance." Thomas was presented with his scholarship award at the
NEWH UK's annual fundraiser at the Ham Yard on September 16th.
Congratulations on your scholarship! Can you tell us more about it?
I received a £1,500 [about $2,000] scholarship from NEWH UK. Our final second-year
project involved creating an innovative hotel design. Our tutors shortlisted 12 students to
present to NEWH judges. I was lucky enough to be chosen as the scholarship winner.
What are you studying?
I am studying towards my BA(Hons) Architecture at the University of Ravensbourne.
How has your scholarship impacted you?
This scholarship has already helped me greatly both academically and professionally. I
have been able to fund my study trips abroad, but most valuably, NEWH has provided me
with vital industry connections and opportunities that I otherwise would not have found.
I was able to network with and gain feedback from industry experts.
What are you up to now?
I am currently in my fi nal year of study. My goal is to establish a career designing hospitality
environments. NEWH has already provided me with the connections I need to make my
goals a reality.

Valerie Coleman-Woodall
Washington DC Metropolitan Chapter
Valerie Coleman-Woodall received an NEWH scholarship while still in design school, and was
introduced to the organization by a professor and mentor; she now acts as a mentor to other
students. Coleman-Woodall has served NEWH as scholarship director, programming codirector, chapter delegate, vice president, and is now enjoying a second term as president of the
Washington DC Metropolitan Chapter. "Working on committees under NEWH has provided
a way for industry leaders to get to know me, my skills and talents. This has led to so many
opportunities like working for a general contracting firm, teaching interior design as an adjunct
professor, and design consulting," she says.
Coleman-Woodall recently rejoined Marriott as a senior interior designer for the Global
Design Americas, CFRST, AC + Moxy New Build Projects department, reviewing architectural
drawings and décor elements for interior designs related to the Fairfield Inn & Suites brand.
