NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Design
Competition: A History
In July 2006, Lynda Sullivan, director of marketing for JL
Furnishings (JLF), brought the idea for a design competition to
the NEWH Sustainable committee, spurred by the generous
offer of support from JLF Lone Meadow CEO and founder Jeff
Lazar and an additional pledge of support from Designtex.
Christine Wasmer, NEWH vice president of education and
founder of Wasmer Contract Group, working with Jillian Van
Dresser, founding principal of the Van Dresser Company,
designed the format for a competition that challenged students
to use the best sustainable technologies and materials in
executing a given project. Two awards were given: one to the
winning student or student team, and one to the student's
design program. The first competition involved the design of
a timeshare; students could choose between renovating an
existing plan or using the same square footage while executing
a completely new timeshare concept. Van Dresser, Wasmer,
and Andrea Thomas, founder of the Thomas Design Source
and NEWH's vice president of scholarship, were the judges for
the first competition, and the awards were presented at HD
Expo 2007 to Stacey Shield and her school, the University of
Cincinnati.
The sustainable design competition fulfills NEWH's
educational mission by connecting professionals in the industry

with students and educators, and highlighting critical thinking
processes about how design can affect solutions to sustainable
challenges in the hospitality industry.
JLF Lone Meadow sponsors the Sustainable Hospitality
Design Competition each year, and sponsors over the years
have included Designtex, Crypton, Valley Forge Fabrics, and
Applied Textiles, the sponsor of the competition for the second
year. Sponsor donations fund the scholarship and travel for
students to HD Expo to receive their award. The competition
has evolved over the years and now offers two awards: one to an
undergraduate and one to a graduate level student.
The 2016-2017 NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Design
Competition scholarship entails a sustainable guest experience
and co-living concept. The projects are due January 30th, 2017,
and the scholarship is open to hospitality interior design or
architecture undergraduate and graduate students. We look
forward to celebrating our winners and sponsors, JLF Lone
Meadow and Applied Textiles at HD Expo on May 3rd, 2017, in
Las Vegas. ❙❘❚

Simeone Deary Design Group Sponsors
$5,000 NEWH Chicago Chapter Scholarship
When Simeone Deary Design Group opened their doors in 2002, one long-term goal was to
someday offer a scholarship to a deserving student. Passionate about helping young people
learn-many current employees began as interns at the firm-Simeone Deary's greatest asset is its
visionary design talent, and the group takes pride in making a contribution to help students lay the
groundwork for their future through education.
Over the years, members of the Simeone Deary team have proudly served on the board, and the
team continues to support NEWH by attending the many industry events hosted each year by their
local chapter. This year, the NEWH Chicago chapter will award a $5,000 scholarship sponsored
by Simeone Deary Design Group to a hospitality interior design or architecture student at a local
NEWH Chicago chapter event-stay tuned! ❙❘❚
