making the outdoor patio really feel like an extension of
the lobby and bar area."
Once the new bar location was solidified, the team added
other intimate areas by utilizing flooring changes, decorative
partition walls, and playing with accent lighting. "All of
these subtle design elements and adjacencies support the
transitional lobby design concept, encouraging guests to use
the space at all times-from morning coffee to happy hour
to a late dinner-throughout their stay," says Bhatnagar.
In addition to redesigning the public spaces-front
desk, lobby, breakfast area, bar, patios-the team also
tackled updates for 5,000-square-feet of meetings space, as
well as corridors, elevators, and guestrooms. In the rooms,
budget constraints limited the upgrade to freshening the
old casegoods and installing new carpeting, lighting, and
wallcoverings.
Warm jewel tones-including brilliant orange and red-
and strong textures "mimic the San Bernardino mountains
and hot springs," according to Bhatnagar, who adds that
the "magnificence and sophistication of the mountains
were brought in through dark wood finishes, which in turn
created a contrasting backdrop for a light and sandy floor
tile." The combinations of hard and soft textures, along
with solid pops of color, "play a key role in energizing the
guest," she says. ❙❘❚
