GETTING TO KNOW

Becca
Kundysek
How did you become involved with NEWH?

As a student at the University of Cincinnati, I received two scholarships from the Chicago
chapter. I stayed connected with NEWH via digital media and communications until graduation
and into my young professional career in Southwest Florida. When deciding to relocate to the
Twin Cities, I was excited to actively connect with the North Central chapter. It was important
to me to get involved, pay it forward to other hospitality students, build relationships in a new
marketplace, and stay connected with the hospitality industry.

What has NEWH done for you, both personally and professionally?

North Central chapter past
president, international
scholarship director, and
interior designer at Cuningham
Group Architecture

NEWH has introduced and linked me to a vast network of individuals who have been wonderful
role models and mentors to me, both personally and professionally. I have the opportunity to
travel and experience diverse cities with exceptional hospitality environments and services, along
with attending highly educational conferences and tradeshows. NEWH has also given me the
chance to develop my leadership and public speaking skills by serving in several different board
positions at both the chapter and international level.

In your role with NEWH, what do you have planned for 2017?

I currently have two positions this year: one, as international scholarship director, and the other
as the North Central past president. For the former, my biggest initiative is to form a solid
committee of individuals from across our many chapters who will share the responsibility of
reviewing international scholarship applications. At the chapter level, my focus is to find the best
candidates to serve on our 2018 board, help the planning committee with our regional tradeshow
happening in the fall, and provide overall guidance for our 2017 board members.

What were some of the highlights of 2016?

Last year, we welcomed a new NFL Stadium into our community. The North Central chapter was
one of the first design organizations in our market to host an event there. The evening consisted
of networking, discussions led by MN Sports Authority and local design and procurement teams,
and VIP tours including locker rooms and center field access.
Our chapter fundraiser was yet again a success with some of the best attendance and
proceeds we have ever had, enabling us to provide larger scholarships this past fall. Our top
scholarship recipient, Lexi Sosalla, was also awarded a trip to the 2017 Leadership Conference.

Tell us a bit about your company and what's new.

Cuningham Group is as busy as ever these days. Since 2016, we have added 115 employees.
This isn't just great news for our company-it is a great indication that the industry is strong
and stable. As an international firm with 10 locations, we are focused on collaboration across
the table and across the world. Sustainability continues to be a high priority for our firm.
Participation in the 2030 Challenge and the trend toward the WELL Building Standard are
some of the initiatives we are incorporating into our projects. We are currently redesigning our
largest office in Minneapolis to be a WELL Building.

When you aren't working or at an NEWH event, where can we find you?
Right now, with my nose in the Ballast book studying for the NCIDQ exams! ❙❘❚
