BDwest
Boutique Design magazine's West Coast trade fair and conference
for hospitality design professionals, BDwest, drew nearly 2,600
attendees from 34 states and four countries to the Los Angeles
Convention Center for its sixth run, April 4-5. The fair featured some
250 manufacturers and marketers of inventive furniture, lighting,
floorcoverings, fabrics, wallcoverings, bath and spa, art, accessories,
and other design elements for hospitality spaces.
Hospitality designers and specifiers attending BDwest had the
opportunity to sharpen their spec-writing skills via the new SmartSpecs Interiors educational series, presented by Boutique Design
and NEWH, Inc. Expert panelists in five hospitality design product

categories-Carpet, Guestroom Casegoods, Upholstered Seating,
Guestroom Lighting, and Fabric-outlined unique considerations
and best practices for writing clear, supplier-ready specs and
avoiding costly errors and delays.
Michelle Finn, who heads HMG, producer of BDwest and sister
trade fair Boutique Design New York (BDNY), says the series will
continue this fall at BDNY, November 11-12 at the Javits Center.
"Smart specification writing fulfills a critical need in today's
hospitality design industry, and we are excited to present these
courses from the manufacturer, designer, brand, and purchasing
agent perspective," she says.

1. The 2018 Boutique 18 honorees and Boutique Design's 2018 Up-andComing Hoteliers were celebrated with a cocktail reception and Q&A at
downtown LA's the Theater at Ace Hotel.
2. The Boutique Design Power Players: Women Leaders in Hospitality
breakfast and panel discussion, presented in partnership with NEWH,
Inc. and moderated by Boutique Design executive editor Mary Scoviak,
included Sue Firestone, SFA Design; Dana Kalczak, Four Seasons Hotels
and Resorts; Pamela Babey, BAMO; Simone Mayer, FOH; Mari Balestrazzi,
Hyatt Hotels; and Anu Saxena, Hilton Supply Management. The event was
sponsored by Bernhardt Hospitality and Sunbrite Outdoor Furniture.
3. The Hospitality Fashion Challenge Runway Event, presented by the

NEWH Orange County regional group and Los
Angeles Founding Chapter at the Exchange LA
nightclub, featured couture fashions crafted by

teams from 14 hospitality design firms using scraps
of tile, carpet, and other reusable design elements
donated by BDwest exhibitors. The team from Puccini Group took Best in
Show honors, and a $3,000 cash prize.
4. Panelists for Boutique Design's 2018 Up-and-Coming Hoteliers,
moderated Mary Scoviak, featured Brian De Lowe, Proper Hospitality;
Michael Fuerstman, Pendry Hotels; and Severine Tatangelo, Studio PCH
(speaking on behalf of honorees Robert De Niro, Nobu Matsuhisa, and
Meir Teper, Nobu Hospitality).
5. Cornell University's Jeanne Varney moderated the new Smart-Specs
Interiors: Upholstered Seating session with panelists Larry Carver, Carver
& Associates; Angela Denney, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG); Karin
Harrington, Studio Partnership; Ian King, MTS Seating; and Jeff Lazar,
JLF Collections.
