SCHOLARSHIPS

NEWH celebrated two scholarship winners during the NEWH Annual Expo Breakfast: The Young
Entrepreneurs at HD Expo
Elisa R. Borja, an interior design major at New York School of Interior Design was awarded the $5,000
NEWH Harvey Nudelman Scholarship. The annual scholarship is presented in honor of former Fabricut
president, the late Harvey Nudelman, and is sponsored by Fabricut Contract and FR-One. "Fabricut
Contract and FR-One are incredibly proud to support our industry's next generation and honor Harvey
Nudelman's legacy through this scholarship," says Matt DeShantz, vice president of Fabricut Contract.
"Harvey was an influential leader in the textile industry for more than 50 years and an active member of
NEWH since its inception. He believed strongly in accessible education and empowering young designers.
We know Harvey would be pleased to see how this scholarship continues to influence the next generation."

The annual NEWH Product Design Competition challenges interior design and architecture
students pursuing careers within the hospitality industry to design a lavatory faucet. Symmons,
the $4,000 scholarship sponsor, also sponsors the students' travel and lodging to HD Expo.
Angela Campos, interior architecture major from Columbia College in Chicago, was the 2018
scholarship recipient. "Winning this scholarship from NEWH and Symmons means so much to me
and my future career as an interior architect by enabling me to really concentrate on my degree,"
she says. "I am emboldened with this scholarship and excited to soon start my career designing
beautiful and sustainable spaces for people."
A prototype of Campos' winning design, "Eloise," was
showcased at the Symmons booth during HD Expo. Campos was
also awarded a $3,500 NEWH Chicago chapter scholarship in
2017. "Symmons Industries is honored to support young designers
shaping their design futures by sponsoring the NEWH Product
Design Competition," adds Symmons Industries marketing manager Danielle DeBenedictis.
Sean Roberts, Symmons Industries; NEWH
"Symmons sponsorship has allowed its team to meet many bright and talented students that will Product Design Competition winner and
scholarship recipient Angela Campos, Columbia
no doubt make an impact in their design community."

NEWH Green Voice Design Competition
The revamped NEWH Green Voice Design Competition
awards consisted of a panel conversation on the key
elements behind the winning project: Hotel Carver
submitted by Keely Lange. Lange, who recently graduated with an interior design degree
from Weber State University, won the $7,500 scholarship sponsored by founding sponsor JLF
lone meadow, Valley Forge Fabrics, and Florida Seating. "Receiving the 2018 NEWH Green
Voice Design Competition scholarship was an incredible experience," says Lange, who is now
working at an interior design firm outside Salt Lake City and hopes to work in the hospitality
industry designing boutique hotels and restaurants. "Throughout my time in school, I had an
interest in sustainable design and have always made it a goal to incorporate those principles
into my projects. It was amazing to see my research come together in my submission for the
competition."
Lange's submission was part of class project lead by Kristen Arnold, associate professor and
program coordinator at Weber State University. The second $7,500 scholarship was awarded to
Kristen Arnold and Green Voice Design
Weber State University's interiors department. "Keely is a very intuitive student who continually

entry for the NEWH contest. We are so proud of her accomplishment and are grateful for the
vice president/scholarship
scholarship awarded to our interior design program," Arnold says. "Our program incorporates
national contests into the curriculum when it's appropriate. We feel doing this adds depth to the course content, encourages more thoughtful
final projects, and at the same time gives students opportunity for scholarship."
Students' entries had to incorporate either LEED or WELL touchpoints while creating a sustainable relationship to the surrounding
community and culture. Educators could use the competition as a class project with students submitting their entry individually or as a
team. Competition criteria changes annually, and this year's version focused on creating an adaptive reuse hotel project with the addition of
shipping containers.
