Family Affair
Artful design and a collaborative spirit has driven Arteriors' 30 successful years

Mark Moussa was some 13 years old when he proudly
assembled his first lamp. At the time, he didn't presume that
one day he'd be designing his own. The founder and creative
director of Dallas-based Arteriors worked alongside his father
in the accessory import business, where he says he "learned
to appreciate how fulfilling a family business can be," so when
he launched his decorative accessories company in 1987 it
was a natural progression. "I can't say I had a distinct goal," he
recalls, "but I knew I wanted to put forth beautiful designs while
creating a company culture that felt collaborative and genuine,
like a family."
Now, Arteriors has evolved into a design powerhouse
spanning furnishings from chandeliers to upholstered seating.
Moussa's children work with him, keeping the family spirit
thriving. After years of fulfilling requests for boutique hotels
and restaurants, Arteriors unveiled a dedicated contract
division in 2007. "I think buyers were drawn to the artfulness
in our designs. Our pieces featured elements of the handmade,
making them perfect for design-driven projects," Moussa
points out. More than a decade later, it's grown even more
attractive to the
hospitality realm by
focusing on three
different pillars:
in-stock products
that are quick
to ship, custom
design services,
and modification
capabilities.

only re-imagined as table lamps. "It was an important lesson
that listening to customers can often lead to some of your most
rewarding ventures," says Moussa. Such designs continue to
resonate with the hospitality industry, including six lighting
bases that recently debuted, featuring two outlets and one
rocker switch. Available in two sizes of 6.5 and 8 inches, with
brushed nickel, matte black, or antique brass finishes, they
can be incorporated into most of Arteriors' stocked designs.
The turnaround for small orders of these, ideal for intimate
hospitality settings such as executive suites and luxury villas,
Moussa notes, is fast and meshes with designers' pressing
deadlines.
Over the past three decades, Moussa has observed that the
need for larger-scale lighting has accelerated, leading Arteriors
to adapt some of its bestselling designs, including the Nessa,
Dallas, and Royalton. This "experiential trend has impacted
hospitality in a big way. The consumer expects to be wowed
in their experiences and environments, and hospitality design
often needs to be ahead of it," he continues. Arteriors has
also made value engineering its own lamp designs a priority,
manipulating resin to
accurately resemble
more precious
materials, from marble
to shagreen. Resin is
indeed cost effective,
Moussa adds,
but it's also more
durable for largescale guestrooms,
allowing designers to
execute their visions
within their allocated
budgets.
