Recapping Green Voice Conversations at HD Expo
By Stacey Olson, Southwest Regional Design Resilience Leader, Gensler

EWH strives to bring next-level education to hospitality industry
tradeshow attendees year after year. For each show, the NEWH Green
Voice series is tailored to culturally relevant and inspirational messaging,
leading the industry and continuously raising the bar to challenge the status
quo. At HD Expo, held May 15-17 at Mandalay Bay Convention Center in
Las Vegas, Green Voice sessions took place in the tradeshow's new Wellness Pavilion that focused on wellness,
sustainability, and related innovation.
"The wellness industry is one of the fastest-growing, affecting all aspects of design-hospitality, workplace,
residential, and retail," says Stacy Shoemaker Rauen, vice president of the Hospitality Design Group and editor in chief,
Hospitality Design magazine. "Wellness has been top of mind for us at the magazine,
and we wanted to make sure this important topic took centerstage at this year's show."
Ever-demanding pressures for increased productivity and profitability cannot
overshadow the demand for enhanced health and wellbeing, corporate transparency,
and leadership in environmental strategy, which yield tangible, quantifiably reduced
impacts. HD Expo and NEWH Green Voice delivered powerful topics addressing
those goals.
In the session The New Luxury: Purpose-filled Experiences, Cara Rude, associate
principal for MCG, led a thoughtful analysis of how sustainability can be wrapped in
luxury via specific insights shared by Katarina Tesarova, global sustainability leader

Carbon: A Rapid Solution to Mitigating Climate Change. This session focused on
designers' and manufacturers' roles in strategic thinking. I led the panel with Lisa
Conway, vice president of sustainability for Interface Americas, and Barbara Rodriguez-Droguett, leader of the College
of Built Environments research on embodied carbon for the University of Washington. Together, we discussed what
embodied carbon is and aimed to normalize the conversation about greenhouse gas and the role material specification
plays in global warming and climate change. We discussed an industry-wide initiative-formed through a partnership
between Interface Americas, Skanska, Armstrong, CertainTeed, and Gensler-that outlines five simple strategies
designers can embrace to quantify and reduce their impact on the planet, while Barbara quantified back-of-theenvelope calculations, such that the audience could grasp the value of a material's footprint.
If you missed HD Expo, not to worry! As NEWH Green Voice volunteers committed to ongoing leadership and
inclusion of sustainability in the hospitality industry, we are here to help. Please reach out directly to any one of our
speakers for more information about their Green Voice conversations. ❙❘❚
