light it fittingly calls to mind the scales of aquatic creatures. "This wall is a very visible surface to
travelers. It gave us the opportunity to create a neutral highlight among all the color that was still
interesting," explains Ashley Kirkland, GrizForm's director of interior architecture.
Melding modernity with the past, the bar's overhead feature, outfitted with the same look-at-me
array of dowels as below, is juxtaposed with the station's restored 1908 ceiling. "It was important
that the cast-iron ceiling remained unobstructed," explains Kirkland. "Also, we wanted to create a
space that felt like a shelter amid the vastness without the use of typical architectural structures.
Finding a balance that was functional and felt inviting was our challenge from start to finish."
Welcoming, indeed. Situated underneath that "historic wonder of a ceiling," Sicilia points out, the
bar encourages patrons to marvel at bygone craftsmanship and design in a fresh setting.
