Natural Appeal
Streetsense interprets the Pacific Northwest's allure in a new Portland hotel

S

culpture and landscape merge in downtown Portland,
Oregon's tranquil Fountain District. Here, close to Tom
McCall Waterfront Park along the Willamette River, the
Porter Portland-part of Hilton's upscale Curio Collection-has
opened as an ode to the city's lush surroundings. Inspired by both
Portland's spirit and its abundance of recreational opportunities,
the 297-room hotel was conceptualized, designed, and branded by
Bethesda, Maryland-based Streetsense.
Jason Maringola, design director of interior architecture, says
that the property "reinterprets the adventure and intrigue of the
Pacific Northwest in an urban, distinctly Portland way. Creating a
storied experience in a new building is not without its challenges.
Every design decision was made with the goal of having it feel like
a manifestation of natural Portland charm within a state-of-the-art
shell."
In the vast dark metal and wood-toned lobby, complete with
library and lounge, guests are greeted by globe pendants, a clock
dominating the hand-glazed tile wall behind the reception desk,

and a slew of colorful seating arrangements, like a serpentine
sofa festooned with burnt gold and pickle green pillows. The
interplay of materials and patterns such as jewel-toned velvet
and traditional plaid is essential to the design narrative, Maringola
points out, a showcase of "cool and curated contradictions."
Conviviality is found at the curved bar, surrounded by metalwork
that channels Portland's industrial heritage, and solace amid the
towering bookshelves, or on the lower level, home to a heated
indoor pool and meditation patio.
Standing atop the lobby's glass staircase offers guests a bird'seye view of the bespoke, vintage-style carpet emblazoned with
the name Portland General Electric (previously located on the site)
and the image of the flower that lends Portland its City of Roses
nickname. Headboards fashioned from dark leather and American
Black Walnut veneer are standouts of the muted guestrooms,
accentuated by atmospheric artworks that also nod to the area's
great outdoors.
