Outside the Lines
Studio 11 Design creates a rich palette for a Dallas hotel revamp

I

t's not every day that designers are gifted with such an
evocative catchphrase as "color outside the lines," but that
was the case for Dallas-based Studio 11 Design as it tackled
the reflagging of a NYLO hotel to the Canvas Hotel Dallas. For its
initial phase, the team was tasked with updating the public spaces-
including the lobby, corridors, restaurant, and rooftop lounge-and
doing so while adhering to a quick timeline of under three months.
The firm's solution is a judicious blend of the extant and the new,
reframed within the mandate for the property to take inspiration
from its historic Southside neighborhood of Cedars, a longtime artist
haven. "Our goal was to warm up the industrial architecture, using
the international Soho House brand as a jumping off point," says
associate principal Greer May. "We wanted to help guests gravitate
from their rooms to the lobby to the restaurant to the rooftop bar
with a mix of soft seating, dining, and bar experiences."

The refresh begins with an entry populated by a crescentshaped, blush-hued sofa and sapphire armchairs. The adjacent
bar introduces a third color, a deep mustard, to form a jewel-tone
scheme that reappears throughout the hotel.
Aside from that vivid palette, art and objets-sourced by
Studio 11's Lou Verne arm, along with local art consultants
SemosMauldin-offer another running theme. A double-wide glass
and metal shelf-wall that serves as a see-through divider between
the bar and Chef's Palette restaurant, for example, was fabricated
locally and is stocked with some of the 500-plus accessories (such
as books, vases, and figurines) collected for the property.
Art pieces include a portrait by Dallas artist Haylee Ryan that
completes the entry vignette and features a pensive woman with
a headdress of red tulips; a neon sculpture that reads "the show
must go on" and serves to light up a niche at the back of the
