Collaborative Spirit
A trio of families turns to Rice Fergus Miller for a community hub in Washington State

P

oulsbo, on Washington State's Liberty Bay, has deep
maritime and Nordic roots, but the Centennial is a decidedly
modern arrival in the small, historic city. Capitalizing upon its
prime location overlooking Centennial Park, this neighborly hangout
purposefully unites a quartet of venues that celebrate work, food,
and drink-and adds a vibrant layer to a community that already
values meaningful relationships.
Architecture firm Rice Fergus Miller, based in nearby Bremerton,
designed the two-story, 39,000-square-foot building that honors
the past as much as it does a forward-thinking collaborative
spirit. The Imbach, Crabtree, and Ryan families have long been
intertwined with Kitsap County, and the Centennial, built by Tim
Ryan Construction as part of the Tim Ryan Properties portfolio, is an
extension of that legacy.

"The entrepreneurs behind this collection of businesses are like
pioneers, or prospectors. They are offering goods and services
blended with an outsized sense of customer experience, which is
new for the west side of Puget Sound," says Steve Rice, architect
and lead designer. "The businesses were imagined together and
they depend on one another. Our job was to design the building to
entangle them, thereby leveraging their collective success."
At the Centennial, Alanna Imbach's Vibe Coworks, a hub
for creatives and innovators, is bolstered by a slate of culinary
establishments from Peter Crabtree of Crabtree Brands: ChocMo
Chocolatier and Café, the liquor shop High Spirits, and Crabtree
Kitchen + Bar. All four spaces champion education and nurture
connections through contemporary interiors rife with rustic and
industrial elements. Sustainability is also prioritized, emphasizing
