ubbed "Furniture City," Grand Rapids, Michigan boasts a
woodworking legacy first spawned in the 1830s with finely
wrought cabinetry. To honor the craftsmanship that fueled
this one-time epicenter of American furniture production, guests
of the AC Hotel by Marriott Grand Rapids Downtown are greeted
by a lobby filled with pieces from notable Herman Miller designers
(the office furniture titan is based a half hour away in Zeeland) like
an Eames Lounge Chair and Noguchi coffee table.
Along with its manufacturing history, Grand Rapids is known for
a rich arts scene. To reflect that energy, custom pieces by seven
different artists are also on display in the hotel, including Sydney
Cash's large-scale light sculpture, a multi-dimensional mirror
by Bower Studios, and an illuminated, paper-spun, geometric
installation by Brittany Gould.
"We were encouraged to be sexy, to take risks, and we
jumped on the idea and did it in a subtle way, like the dramatic
artwork that plays with light and shadow," explains Valentina

Castellon, hospitality interior designer and senior associate in
the Minneapolis office of DLR Group. The firm was tasked with
transforming a late 19th-century warehouse-a duo of timber
structures united by an atrium-into the 130-room AC Hotel.
"We took the scientific route and studied the way smoke moves
through space, translating those soft curves to the design."
By replacing atrium windows, working around original posts
and beams, and restoring bronze metal, DLR Group brought the
old brick warehouse's architecture back to life, nurturing a design
concept formed by the adage "path of least resistance."
Inside at reception, a mix of marble, glass, walnut, and smoky
porcelain is heightened by slats of wood that dress, and add depth
to, the ceiling. It paves the way to the linear, Art-Deco-reminiscent
AC Lounge, visibly inviting from the outside through huge
windows. "We didn't want it to feel like a living room, but we wanted
it to have intimacy," Castellon points out, noting the fireplace and
duo of L-shaped panels composed of acrylic fins.

A wooden slat
ceiling installation
adds drama to the
reception area,
which additionally
mixes textures of
marble, glass, and
porcelain in smoky
hues.
