But there were a number of technical challenges along the
way. "The spa footprint expanded into areas previously occupied
by the fitness center and meeting rooms. With so much relocated
and added plumbing, it was decided that removing the existing slab
within the existing structure would be the most feasible way forward,"
explains Marshall. "There was also an electrical room in the center
of the space. The new floorplan had to be devised so that this room
was left in place."
The resort's environs are also honored in the revamped spa layout.
A palette of French gray and lavender combined with elements like
a treatment corridor buoyed by a river-rock border, and porcelain
plank flooring resembling wood call to mind the landscape. It's "a
stunning natural backdrop for the property that was central to the
overall design concept for the expansion," says HBG Design interior
designer Landon Shockey, noting the spa's muted hues and display
of photography that was shot on the resort's own peaceful grounds.
Separate men's and women's lounge areas, complete with
whirlpools, steamrooms, saunas, and energy-efficient showers,
reinforce the notions of relaxation and escape. The men's zone has
deeper gray hues, complemented by a 3D tile accent wall and leather
upholstery. On the female side, louvered screens, hexagonal floor
tiles, and curtains that provide intimate seating pockets pave the way
to the vitality pool, where a striking custom feature wall crafted from
mosaic tiles based on a wildflower watercolor by Bay Area artist Jen
Garrido hangs above.
An illuminated "sky" chock full of stars and a floor-to-ceiling
Himalayan salt wall accompanied by loungers are other highlights for
the ladies. "This glowing wall," adds Shockey, "sets a dramatic mood
for the restful pursuits of the spa-goer."
