Elkus Manfredi breathes new life into a historic Palm Beach hotel

I

n 1924, when the Bradley Park Hotel was built in Palm Beach,
Florida, the atmosphere was one of "graciousness, so we
strengthened that spirit and brought it into today's world," says
Elizabeth Lowrey, principal and director of interior architecture
at Elkus Manfredi Architects. Earlier this year the Boston firm
completed its renovation of the historic Mediterranean Revival
structure now home to the White Elephant Palm Beach, sister to the
Nantucket Island mainstay of the same name.
A love for the residential quality of the architecture (the
terracotta roof and exterior scalloped balcony railings are among

the updated components) led the team to design from a singular
vision: the personally curated home, unpretentious and casually
elegant, of a well-traveled, art-collecting Palm Beach host.
Like the Bradley Park era, the outdoor courtyard, now expanded
with a pool acting as a privacy-inducing buffer from the street, is
the centerpiece of the 32-room retreat. Through a door carved from
reclaimed wood is the lobby, with its series of arches mirroring the
façade, the recreated original fireplace, and artwork from the likes
of Ghada Amer, Bernhard Buhmann, Orit Fuchs, and Sue Williams.
