Natural Wonder
EDG crafts a luxurious, yet simple, outdoor retreat near Acadia National Forest

F

or both EDG Design and its client Kampgrounds of America
(KOA), the creation of the 64-tent, 60-acre Terramor
Outdoor Resort in Bar Harbor, Maine, was a learning
experience. "Although they are a leader in the outdoor lodging
category, KOA was newer to the realm of luxury hospitality," says
Jennifer Johanson, president and CEO of the Novato, Californiabased EDG. Similarly, she adds, "this was our first foray into this
category. We had a lot of fun taking a deep-dive into researching the
industry and applying our luxury hospitality design expertise towards
this emerging hospitality class."
After receiving the brief, the EDG team organized a company-wide
social event. Working from its analysis of the demographic data that
KOA provided, the team crafted guest profiles and assigned them to
their co-workers, says Johanson. "We asked everyone to answer a

series of questions and to then respond to a variety of scenarios, all
approached from their distinct character's perspective," she explains.
"This created a foundation for us to brainstorm and helped define the
creative direction we ultimately took for the interiors."
In addition to interiors (locally based DGC Architects handled
exteriors), EDG designed the property's firepit areas and the
communal Lodge, which offers dining options and a multitude of
terraces. The firm also took control of the resort's branding. "What
began with positioning and crafting a narrative for this one-of-a-kind
experience carried through to the property's name, touchpoints,
collateral, and digital presence," Johanson says.
Natural woods and green hues predominate. The spacious
tents-which run approximately 500 square feet, not including
